Exodus 13

1 And Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying,2 Sanctify unto me all the first-born, whatsoever openeth the womb among the children of Israel, both of man and of beast: it is mine.

3 And Moses said unto the people, Remember this day, in which ye came out from Egypt, out of the house of bondage; for by strength of hand Jehovah brought you out from this place: there shall no leavened bread be eaten.4 This day ye go forth in the month Abib.5 And it shall be, when Jehovah shall bring thee into the land of the Canaanite, and the Hittite, and the Amorite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite, which he sware unto thy fathers to give thee, a land flowing with milk and honey, that thou shalt keep this service in this month.6 Seven days thou shalt eat unleavened bread, and in the seventh day shall be a feast to Jehovah.7 Unleavened bread shall be eaten throughout the seven days; and there shall no leavened bread be seen with thee, neither shall there be leaven seen with thee, in all thy borders.8 And thou shalt tell thy son in that day, saying, It is because of that which Jehovah did for me when I came forth out of Egypt.9 And it shall be for a sign unto thee upon thy hand, and for a memorial between thine eyes, that the law of Jehovah may be in thy mouth: for with a strong hand hath Jehovah brought thee out of Egypt.10 Thou shalt therefore keep this ordinance in its season from year to year.

11 And it shall be, when Jehovah shall bring thee into the land of the Canaanite, as he sware unto thee and to thy fathers, and shall give it thee,12 that thou shalt set apart unto Jehovah all that openeth the womb, and every firstling which thou hast that cometh of a beast; the males shall be Jehovah’s.13 And every firstling of an ass thou shalt redeem with a lamb; and if thou wilt not redeem it, then thou shalt break its neck: and all the first-born of man among thy sons shalt thou redeem.14 And it shall be, when thy son asketh thee in time to come, saying, What is this? that thou shalt say unto him, By strength of hand Jehovah brought us out from Egypt, from the house of bondage:15 and it came to pass, when Pharaoh would hardly let us go, that Jehovah slew all the first-born in the land of Egypt, both the first-born of man, and the first-born of beast: therefore I sacrifice to Jehovah all that openeth the womb, being males; but all the first-born of my sons I redeem.16 And it shall be for a sign upon thy hand, and for frontlets between thine eyes: for by strength of hand Jehovah brought us forth out of Egypt.

17 And it came to pass, when Pharaoh had let the people go, that God led them not by the way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near; for God said, Lest peradventure the people repent when they see war, and they return to Egypt:18 but God led the people about, by the way of the wilderness by the Red Sea: and the children of Israel went up armed out of the land of Egypt.19 And Moses took the bones of Joseph with him: for he had straitly sworn the children of Israel, saying, God will surely visit you; and ye shall carry up my bones away hence with you.20 And they took their journey from Succoth, and encamped in Etham, in the edge of the wilderness.21 And Jehovah went before them by day in a pillar of cloud, to lead them the way, and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light, that they might go by day and by night:22 the pillar of cloud by day, and the pillar of fire by night, departed not from before the people.

Exodus 13

De eerstgeborenen worden opgedragen aan God

1 Toen zei de HERE tegen Mozes:

2 ‘Draag alle oudste zonen van Israël aan Mij op en ook de oudste mannelijke dieren, zij zijn van Mij!’
3 Mozes zei tegen het volk: ‘Dit is een dag die wij altijd moeten blijven gedenken: de dag dat de HERE ons uit Egypte en de slavernij heeft bevrijd. De HERE heeft ons met veel wonderen bevrijd en daarom mag er niets gezuurds worden gegeten.4 Deze dag waarop wij vertrekken, is de tiende dag van de maand Abib (dat is de eerste maand).5 Het is de dag van de uittocht uit Egypte, waarop de HERE ons naar het land van de Kanaänieten, Hethieten, Amorieten, Chiwwieten en Jebusieten zal brengen. Dat is het land dat Hij heeft beloofd aan onze voorouders, een land dat overvloeit van melk en honing.6 Zeven dagen lang moet er ongezuurd brood worden gegeten en mag er geen gezuurd deeg in uw huis of zelfs in het land zijn.

7 Op de zevende dag zal er een groot feest voor de HERE worden gevierd.
8 Die dag moet iedere vader aan zijn zoon uitleggen: “Dit feest vier ik als een herinnering aan wat de HERE heeft gedaan bij mijn uittocht uit Egypte”.9 Deze jaarlijkse feestweek zal u kenmerken als het unieke volk van de HERE, alsof er een merkteken op uw handen en voorhoofden was als teken dat u aan de HERE toebehoort. En laat de voorschriften van de HERE dan duidelijk weerklinken.10 Vier dit feest dus elk jaar op de daarvoor vastgestelde tijd.11 Wanneer de HERE ons naar het land heeft gebracht dat Hij lang geleden aan onze voorouders heeft beloofd en waar de Kanaänieten nu wonen, onthoud dan12 dat alle oudste zonen en het eerstgeborene van de dieren aan de HERE toebehoren en geef deze ook aan Hem.13 Een eerstgeboren ezelsveulen kunt u terugkrijgen van de HERE in ruil voor een lam. Maar als u besluit niet te ruilen, moet u het ezelsveulen doden. Uw oudste zoon móet u echter terugkopen van de HERE.14 Als uw zoon later vraagt: “Wat betekent dit allemaal?”, dan moet u hem vertellen: “Met machtige wonderen bevrijdde de HERE ons uit Egypte en uit de slavernij.15 De farao wilde ons niet laten gaan en daarom doodde de HERE alle eerstgeborenen van Egypte, zowel van de mensen als van de dieren. Daarom geef ik alle mannelijke eerstgeborenen aan de HERE. Het eerstgeborene van de dieren offer ik aan de HERE en mijn oudste zoon koop ik van de HERE terug”.

16 Deze herdenking kenmerkt ons als het volk van de HERE, alsof Hij zijn merkteken op onze handen en voorhoofden had gezet. Wij herdenken dat de HERE ons met een sterke hand uit Egypte heeft bevrijd.’
17 Toen de farao de Israëlieten had laten gaan, voerde God het volk niet door het land van de Filistijnen, wat de kortste weg naar het beloofde land was. Want God zei: ‘Het volk zou ontmoedigd kunnen worden als zij zich een weg door dat land moesten banen en dan zouden zij in verleiding komen om naar Egypte terug te gaan.’18 Daarom stuurde de HERE het volk de woestijnweg naar de Rietzee op. Toegerust voor de strijd lieten zij Egypte achter zich.19 Mozes nam ook het gebeente van Jozef mee, omdat die de zonen van Jakob plechtig had laten zweren dat zij zijn gebeente zouden meenemen wanneer God hen uit Egypte zou bevrijden. Want hij was er zeker van dat dit eens zou gebeuren.20 Na het vertrek uit Sukkot sloeg het volk zijn kamp op bij Etam, aan de rand van de woestijn.21 De HERE wees hun overdag de weg door middel van een wolk en ’s nachts door middel van een zuil van vuur. Op die manier konden zij dag en nacht doorreizen.

22 De wolk week overdag niet van boven het volk en ’s nachts was er altijd de zuil van vuur.
