Exodus 23

1 Thou shalt not take up a false report: put not thy hand with the wicked to be an unrighteous witness.2 Thou shalt not follow a multitude to do evil; neither shalt thou speak in a cause to turn aside after a multitude to wrest justice:3 neither shalt thou favor a poor man in his cause.

4 If thou meet thine enemy’s ox or his ass going astray, thou shalt surely bring it back to him again.5 If thou see the ass of him that hateth thee lying under his burden, thou shalt forbear to leave him, thou shalt surely release it with him.

6 Thou shalt not wrest the justice due to thy poor in his cause.7 Keep thee far from a false matter; and the innocent and righteous slay thou not: for I will not justify the wicked.8 And thou shalt take no bribe: for a bribe blindeth them that have sight, and perverteth the words of the righteous.9 And a sojourner shalt thou not oppress: for ye know the heart of a sojourner, seeing ye were sojourners in the land of Egypt.

10 And six years thou shalt sow thy land, and shalt gather in the increase thereof:11 but the seventh year thou shalt let it rest and lie fallow; that the poor of thy people may eat: and what they leave the beast of the field shall eat. In like manner thou shalt deal with thy vineyard, and with thy oliveyard.12 Six days thou shalt do thy work, and on the seventh day thou shalt rest; that thine ox and thine ass may have rest, and the son of thy handmaid, and the sojourner, may be refreshed.13 And in all things that I have said unto you take ye heed: and make no mention of the name of other gods, neither let it be heard out of thy mouth.

14 Three times thou shalt keep a feast unto me in the year.15 The feast of unleavened bread shalt thou keep: seven days thou shalt eat unleavened bread, as I commanded thee, at the time appointed in the month Abib (for in it thou camest out from Egypt); and none shall appear before me empty:16 and the feast of harvest, the first-fruits of thy labors, which thou sowest in the field: and the feast of ingathering, at the end of the year, when thou gatherest in thy labors out of the field.17 Three times in the year all thy males shall appear before the Lord Jehovah.

18 Thou shalt not offer the blood of my sacrifice with leavened bread; neither shall the fat of my feast remain all night until the morning.19 The first of the first-fruits of thy ground thou shalt bring into the house of Jehovah thy God. Thou shalt not boil a kid in its mother’s milk.

20 Behold, I send an angel before thee, to keep thee by the way, and to bring thee into the place which I have prepared.21 Take ye heed before him, and hearken unto his voice; provoke him not; for he will not pardon your transgression: for my name is in him.22 But if thou shalt indeed hearken unto his voice, and do all that I speak; then I will be an enemy unto thine enemies, and an adversary unto thine adversaries.23 For mine angel shall go before thee, and bring thee in unto the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and the Canaanite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite: and I will cut them off.24 Thou shalt not bow down to their gods, nor serve them, nor do after their works; but thou shalt utterly overthrow them, and break in pieces their pillars.25 And ye shall serve Jehovah your God, and he will bless thy bread, and thy water; and I will take sickness away from the midst of thee.26 There shall none cast her young, nor be barren, in thy land: the number of thy days I will fulfil.27 I will send my terror before thee, and will discomfit all the people to whom thou shalt come, and I will make all thine enemies turn their backs unto thee.28 And I will send the hornet before thee, which shall drive out the Hivite, the Canaanite, and the Hittite, from before thee.29 I will not drive them out from before thee in one year, lest the land become desolate, and the beasts of the field multiply against thee.30 By little and little I will drive them out from before thee, until thou be increased, and inherit the land.31 And I will set thy border from the Red Sea even unto the sea of the Philistines, and from the wilderness unto the River: for I will deliver the inhabitants of the land into your hand: and thou shalt drive them out before thee.32 Thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor with their gods.33 They shall not dwell in thy land, lest they make thee sin against me; for if thou serve their gods, it will surely be a snare unto thee.

Andere wetten

1 ‘U mag geen valse geruchten verspreiden. Help een schuldige niet door als getuige iets te verklaren, waarvan u weet dat het niet waar is.

2-3 Als alle mensen het slechte pad opgaan, moet u zich niet bij hen voegen. Doe dat ook niet als u in een rechtszaak moet getuigen, want dan doet u het recht geweld aan. Getuig ook niet in het voordeel van iemand, alleen omdat hij arm is.
4 Als u ergens een verdwaald rund of een verdwaalde ezel van uw vijand ziet lopen, breng het dier dan terug bij zijn eigenaar.

5 Als u ziet dat de ezel van uw vijand onder een zware lading is bezweken, laat die man dan niet in zijn eentje zwoegen, maar help hem de vracht af te laden en de ezel weer overeind te krijgen.
6 U mag iemand in een rechtszaak niet benadelen, omdat hij arm is.7 Werk nooit mee aan een valse beschuldiging van iemand, laat nooit een onschuldige ter dood veroordelen, want Ik weet precies wie wel en wie niet schuldig is.8 Neem geen steekpenningen aan, want steekpenningen staan een eerlijk oordeel in de weg en kunnen een onschuldige benadelen.

9 Buit vreemdelingen niet uit, want u weet wat het is om vreemdeling te zijn, omdat u zelf vreemdelingen in Egypte bent geweest.
10 Zes jaar achtereen kunt u uw land inzaaien en de oogst binnenhalen,11 maar het zevende jaar moet u het land met rust laten en braak laten liggen. De armen kunnen eventuele gewassen oogsten en de rest is voor de dieren. Datzelfde geldt voor uw wijngaarden en olijfbomen.

12 Zes dagen mag u werken, maar op de zevende dag moet u rusten, zodat ook uw runderen en ezels op adem kunnen komen en de leden van uw huishouding – de slaven en bezoekers – kunnen uitrusten.

13 Doe uw best u aan al deze regels te houden, roep nooit een andere god aan.
14 Driemaal per jaar moet u feest vieren ter ere van Mij.15 Het eerste is het Feest van de Ongezuurde Broden, zeven dagen lang moet u ongezuurde broden eten, zoals Ik heb bevolen. Dit feest wordt elk jaar gevierd in de maand Abib, de maand waarin u Egypte verliet. Op dat feest moet iedereen Mij een offer brengen.16 Het tweede is het Oogstfeest of Pinksterfeest, waarbij u Mij de eerste opbrengst van uw oogst aanbiedt. Het derde feest is het Inzamelingsfeest of Loofhuttenfeest, dat u viert wanneer de hele oogst binnen is.

17 Op deze drie jaarlijkse feesten moeten alle mannen van Israël verschijnen voor de Oppermachtige HERE.
18 Het bloed van een offerdier mag niet samen met iets gezuurds worden geofferd, het vet van mijn feestoffer mag niet blijven liggen tot de volgende morgen.

19 Bij het begin van de oogst moet u het beste deel daarvan bij de HERE, uw God, brengen. U mag een jong bokje niet koken in de melk van zijn moeder.
20 Ik stuur een Engel voor u uit om u veilig naar het land te brengen dat Ik voor u heb bestemd.21 Houd Hem in ere, gehoorzaam Hem en spreek Hem niet tegen, want Hij zal u dat niet vergeven, Hij is mijn vertegenwoordiger en draagt mijn naam.22 Maar als u goed naar Hem luistert, Hem gehoorzaamt en alles doet wat Ik zeg, dan zal Ik de vijand van uw vijanden zijn en allen die u verdrukten zal Ik in verdrukking brengen.

23 Want mijn Engel zal vóór u uit gaan en u brengen in het land van de Amorieten, Hethieten, Perizzieten, Kanaänieten, Chiwwieten en Jebusieten. Ik zal die volken vernietigen.
24 U mag de goden van die volken niet aanbidden noch een offer brengen. Volg niet het voorbeeld van deze heidense volken, u moet hen tot het bittere einde bestrijden en hun afgodsbeelden aan stukken slaan.25 U zult alleen de HERE, uw God, vereren. Als u dat doet, zal Ik u zegenen met brood en water en de ziekten bij u wegnemen.

26 Geen enkele vrouw in uw land zal een miskraam krijgen of onvruchtbaar zijn en u zult een lang leven hebben.
27 Het ontzag voor God zal Ik voor u doen uitgaan en dat zal paniek zaaien onder de volken door wiens landen u trekt. Zij zullen zelfs op de vlucht slaan!28 Bovendien stuur Ik horzels voor u uit die de Chiwwieten, Kanaänieten en Hethieten op de vlucht zullen jagen.29 Dat zal Ik niet in één jaar doen, anders wordt het land een woestenij en komen er te veel wilde dieren.30 Stukje bij beetje zal Ik hen voor u uitdrijven, net zolang tot uw volk groot genoeg is om het land in bezit te nemen.31 De grenzen van uw land zullen van de Rietzee tot aan de zee bij de Filistijnen lopen en van de zuidelijke woestijn tot aan de Eufraat. U zult de inwoners van dat land in uw macht krijgen en uit het land verdrijven.32 U mag geen verbond met hen of met hun afgoden sluiten.

33 En laat hen vooral niet bij u blijven! Hun heidense gewoonten en hun afgoden mogen u niet besmetten, zodat u tegen Mij gaat zondigen. Denk niet dat u daartegen wel bestand bent, want dat is niet zo. Het is een sluipend gevaar.’
