Exodus 4

1 And Moses answered and said, But, behold, they will not believe me, nor hearken unto my voice; for they will say, Jehovah hath not appeared unto thee.2 And Jehovah said unto him, What is that in thy hand? And he said, A rod.3 And he said, Cast in on the ground. And he cast it on the ground, and it became a serpent; and Moses fled from before it.4 And Jehovah said unto Moses, Put forth thy hand, and take it by the tail: (and he put forth his hand, and laid hold of it, and it became a rod in his hand:)5 That they may believe that Jehovah, the God of their fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath appeared unto thee.6 And Jehovah said furthermore unto him, Put now thy hand into thy bosom. And he put his hand into his bosom: and when he took it out, behold, his hand was leprous, as white as snow.7 And he said, Put thy hand into thy bosom again. (And he put his hand into his bosom again; and when he took it out of his bosom, behold, it was turned again as his other flesh.)8 And it shall come to pass, if they will not believe thee, neither hearken to the voice of the first sign, that they will believe the voice of the latter sign.9 And it shall come to pass, if they will not believe even these two signs, neither hearken unto thy voice, that thou shalt take of the water of the river, and pour it upon the dry land: and the water which thou takest out of the river shall become blood upon the dry land.

10 And Moses said unto Jehovah, Oh, Lord, I am not eloquent, neither heretofore, nor since thou hast spoken unto thy servant; for I am slow of speech, and of a slow tongue.11 And Jehovah said unto him, Who hath made man’s mouth? Or who maketh a man dumb, or deaf, or seeing, or blind? Is it not I, Jehovah?12 Now therefore go, and I will be with thy mouth, and teach thee what thou shalt speak.13 And he said, Oh, Lord, send, I pray thee, by the hand of him whom thou wilt send.14 And the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Moses, and he said, Is there not Aaron thy brother the Levite? I know that he can speak well. And also, behold, he cometh forth to meet thee: and when he seeth thee, he will be glad in his heart.15 And thou shalt speak unto him, and put the words in his mouth: and I will be with thy mouth, and with his mouth, and will teach you what ye shall do.16 And he shall be thy spokesman unto the people; and it shall come to pass, that he shall be to thee a mouth, and thou shalt be to him as God.17 And thou shalt take in thy hand this rod, wherewith thou shalt do the signs.18 And Moses went and returned to Jethro his father-in-law, and said unto him, Let me go, I pray thee, and return unto my brethren that are in Egypt, and see whether they be yet alive. And Jethro said to Moses, Go in peace.19 And Jehovah said unto Moses in Midian, Go, return into Egypt; for all the men are dead that sought thy life.20 And Moses took his wife and his sons, and set them upon an ass, and he returned to the land of Egypt: and Moses took the rod of God in his hand.21 And Jehovah said unto Moses, When thou goest back into Egypt, see that thou do before Pharaoh all the wonders which I have put in thy hand: but I will harden his heart and he will not let the people go.22 And thou shalt say unto Pharaoh, Thus saith Jehovah, Israel is my son, my first-born:23 and I have said unto thee, Let my son go, that he may serve me; and thou hast refused to let him go: behold, I will slay thy son, thy first-born.24 And it came to pass on the way at the lodging-place, that Jehovah met him, and sought to kill him.25 Then Zipporah took a flint, and cut off the foreskin of her son, and cast it at his feet; and she said, Surely a bridegroom of blood art thou to me.26 So he let him alone. Then she said, A bridegroom of blood art thou, because of the circumcision.

27 And Jehovah said to Aaron, Go into the wilderness to meet Moses. And he went, and met him in the mountain of God, and kissed him.28 And Moses told Aaron all the words of Jehovah wherewith he had sent him, and all the signs wherewith he had charged him.29 And Moses and Aaron went and gathered together all the elders of the children of Israel:30 and Aaron spake all the words which Jehovah had spoken unto Moses, and did the signs in the sight of the people.31 And the people believed: and when they heard that Jehovah had visited the children of Israel, and that he had seen their affliction, then they bowed their heads and worshipped.

1 Mozes zei evenwel: ‘Zij zullen mij niet geloven! Ze zullen het niet doen en zeker niet als ík het zeg. Zij zullen zeggen: “De HERE is helemaal niet aan u verschenen!”’2 ‘Wat hebt u daar in uw hand?’ vroeg de HERE hem. ‘Een herdersstaf,’ antwoordde Mozes.3 ‘Gooi hem eens op de grond,’ zei de HERE. Mozes gooide de staf neer, hij veranderde onmiddellijk in een slang en Mozes deed snel een stap terug.4 Toen zei de HERE: ‘Pak hem bij zijn staart!’ Mozes deed dat en plotseling werd het weer een herdersstaf!5 ‘Doe dit en zij zullen u geloven!’ zei de HERE. ‘Dan zullen zij er van overtuigd zijn dat de HERE, de God van Abraham, Isaak en Jakob, werkelijk aan u is verschenen.6 Steek nu uw hand tussen uw kleren ter hoogte van uw borst.’ Mozes deed het en toen hij de hand terugtrok, was die wit van de uitslag!7 ‘Steek hem nu weer tussen uw kleren,’ zei God. Toen Mozes dat deed en de hand daarna weer terugtrok, was de uitslag verdwenen!8 ‘Als zij het eerste wonder niet geloven, zal het tweede hen wel overtuigen!’ zei de HERE.9 ‘En als zij u na deze twee wonderen nog niet geloven, neem dan wat water uit de Nijl en gooi dat op de grond. Het zal veranderen in bloed.’10 Maar Mozes smeekte: ‘Och Here, ik ben helemaal geen goede spreker! Ik ben het nooit geweest en zal het ook nooit worden, ook niet nu U met mij gesproken hebt. Ik kan nooit de juiste woorden vinden.11 ‘Wie heeft de mens een mond gegeven?’ vroeg de Here hem. ‘Ben Ik dat niet, de HERE? Wie maakt de mens stom of doof, ziende of blind?12 Vooruit, zoek niet langer naar uitvluchten. Doe wat Ik u heb opgedragen. Ik zal u helpen met spreken en u vertellen wat u moet zeggen.’13 Maar Mozes wierp tegen: ‘Here, stuur toch alstublieft iemand anders!’

14 Toen werd de HERE boos en zei: ‘Goed, uw broer Aäron is een goed spreker. Hij komt hierheen om u te zoeken en zal erg blij zijn u te vinden.
15 Ik zal u zeggen wat u hem moet vertellen en dan zal Ik u beiden helpen bij het spreken en u zeggen wat u moet doen.16 Hij zal in uw plaats het volk toespreken. Net zoals Ik u vertel wat u moet zeggen, zult u het hem vertellen.

17 En vergeet niet uw staf mee te nemen zodat u de wonderen kunt doen die Ik u heb laten zien.’

18 Mozes ging terug naar huis en besprak de zaak met zijn schoonvader Jetro. ‘Als u het goed vindt,’ zei Mozes, ‘ga ik terug naar Egypte om mijn familie te bezoeken. Ik weet niet eens of ze nog wel leven.’ ‘Ga in vrede,’ antwoordde Jetro.
19 Voordat Mozes Midjan verliet, zei de HERE tegen hem: ‘Wees niet bang om naar Egypte terug te gaan, want allen die u wilden doden, zijn overleden.’20 Zo trok Mozes met zijn vrouw en zonen op ezels naar Egypte. De ‘staf van God’ hield hij stevig vast!21 De HERE zei tegen hem: ‘Als u terugkomt in Egypte, moet u naar de farao gaan en hem de wonderen laten zien die Ik u heb getoond. Ik zal hem echter koppig maken zodat hij het volk niet zal laten gaan.22 Zeg dan tegen de farao: “De HERE zegt: Israël is mijn oudste zoon

23 en Ik heb u opgedragen hem te laten gaan zodat hij Mij kan aanbidden. Als u weigert, zal Ik uw oudste zoon doden.’
24 Mozes reisde verder met zijn gezin en toen hij op een avond stopte om te overnachten, verscheen de HERE hem en probeerde hem te doden.25 Zijn vrouw Sippora greep een stenen mes, besneed haar zoon en hield de bloedende voorhuid tegen Mozes’ voet.

26 ‘Ik heb je leven gered met het bloed van mijn zoon,’ zei zij. Toen liet de HERE Mozes met rust.
27 Daarna zei de HERE tegen Aäron: ‘Ga Mozes in de woestijn tegemoet.’ Aäron reisde naar de berg Horeb, de berg van God, en ontmoette Mozes daar. Het was een gelukkig weerzien.28 Mozes vertelde Aäron wat de HERE hem had opgedragen en wat zij moesten zeggen. Ook vertelde hij over de staf en de wonderen die zij voor de farao moesten doen.29 Zo gingen Mozes en Aäron samen terug naar Egypte en riepen de leiders van het volk Israël bijeen.30 Aäron vertelde hun wat de HERE tegen Mozes had gezegd en Mozes toonde hun de wonderen.

31 Het volk geloofde dat de HERE hem had gestuurd. Toen de mensen hoorden dat de HERE hun moeilijkheden had gezien en hen nu wilde redden, waren zij erg blij. Zij knielden neer en aanbaden Hem.
