Galatians 5

1 For freedom did Christ set us free: stand fast therefore, and be not entangled again in a yoke of bondage.2 Behold, I Paul say unto you, that, if ye receive circumcision, Christ will profit you nothing.3 Yea, I testify again to every man that receiveth circumcision, that he is a debtor to do the whole law.4 Ye are severed from Christ, ye would be justified by the law; ye are fallen away from grace.5 For we through the Spirit by faith wait for the hope of righteousness.6 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth anything, nor uncircumcision; but faith working through love.7 Ye were running well; who hindered you that ye should not obey the truth?8 This persuasion came not of him that calleth you.9 A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump.10 I have confidence to you-ward in the Lord, that ye will be none otherwise minded: but he that troubleth you shall bear his judgment, whosoever he be.11 But I, brethren, if I still preach circumcision, why am I still persecuted? then hath the stumbling-block of the cross been done away.12 I would that they that unsettle you would even go beyond circumcision.13 For ye, brethren, were called for freedom; only use not your freedom for an occasion to the flesh, but through love be servants one to another.14 For the whole law is fulfilled in one word, even in this: Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.15 But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another.16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are contrary the one to the other; that ye may not do the things that ye would.18 But if ye are led by the Spirit, ye are not under the law.19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these: fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,20 idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousies, wraths, factions, divisions, parties,21 envyings, drunkenness, revellings, and such like; of which I forewarn you, even as I did forewarn you, that they who practise such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,23 meekness, self-control; against such there is no law.24 And they that are of Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with the passions and the lusts thereof.25 If we live by the Spirit, by the Spirit let us also walk.26 Let us not become vainglorious, provoking one another, envying one another.

Galaten 5

Vrijheid in Christus

1 Christus heeft ons dus de vrijheid gegeven. Dat is pas echte vrijheid! Laat u die niet ontnemen door weer een slaaf van wetten te worden.2 Luister goed naar wat ik nu zeg: als u erop rekent dat het met God in orde komt door u te laten besnijden en de Joodse wetten te houden, zal Christus u niet redden!3 Ik zeg het nog eens: wie zich laat besnijden, moet ook altijd alle andere Joodse wetten gehoorzamen.4 Als u probeert het met God in orde te maken door de wet te houden, hebt u de band met Christus verbroken, u wijst daarmee zijn genade van de hand.5 Wij, christenen, hopen dat het tussen God en ons weer in orde komt door de Heilige Geest op grond van ons geloof.

6 Voor wie bij Christus Jezus hoort, is het al of niet besneden zijn volmaakt onbelangrijk. Het enige wat telt, is geloof dat zich in liefde uit.
7 U was zo goed op weg. Wie heeft u ervan weerhouden de waarheid te blijven volgen?8 God in elk geval niet, want Hij heeft u geroepen om vrij te zijn.9 En u weet dat een klein beetje zuurdeeg het hele deeg al zuur maakt.10 Ik vertrouw erop dat uw band met de Here zo sterk is dat u niet zult afwijken van wat ik u heb geleerd. Maar wie onder u onrust heeft gebracht, krijgt zijn verdiende loon, wie het ook is.11 Sommigen beweren zelfs dat ík zeg dat besnijden nodig is. Maar dan vraag ik mij wel af, vrienden, waarom ik nog steeds vervolgd word. Als dat waar was, zou het voor niemand een struikelblok zijn dat ik Christus bekendmaak, die aan het kruis gestorven is.12 Laten die onruststokers zichzelf maar castreren!13 Broeders en zusters, God heeft u niet de vrijheid gegeven om te misbruiken en uw eigen zin te doen, maar om elkaar te dienen in een geest van liefde.14 De hele wet is immers samengevat in dit ene gebod: ‘Heb uw naaste net zo lief als uzelf.’

15 Maar als u als beesten tegen elkaar tekeergaat, kijk dan maar uit dat u elkaar niet verslindt.
16 Leef altijd in gehoorzaamheid aan de Heilige Geest, dan zal de zonde geen kans krijgen zich uit te leven.17 Want de zondige neigingen gaan in tegen de verlangens van de Heilige Geest en omgekeerd. Deze twee krachten zijn altijd met elkaar in conflict. U moet dus niet doen wat u maar wilt.

18 Als u zich voortdurend door de Heilige Geest laat leiden, valt u niet meer onder de wet.
19 Het is duidelijk wat de zondige natuur voortbrengt: overspel, ontucht, vuiligheid en losbandigheid,20 afgoderij en spiritisme, haat, ruzie, nijd, drift, rivaliteit, onenigheid, sektarisme,21 jaloezie, dronkenschap, onmatigheid en meer van dergelijke dingen. Ik heb u al eens eerder gezegd dat mensen die dat soort dingen doen, het Koninkrijk van God niet zullen ontvangen.22 Maar de Heilige Geest brengt ons tot betere dingen: liefde, blijdschap, vrede, geduld, vriendelijkheid, mildheid, trouw, tederheid en zelfbeheersing.23 Er is geen wet die zulke dingen veroordeelt.24 Wie bij Jezus Christus hoort, heeft met zijn oude natuur en begeerten afgerekend, die zijn aan het kruis geslagen.25 Als de Geest ons nieuw leven heeft gegeven, moeten wij ons ook in alle opzichten door de Geest laten leiden.

26 Laten wij niet hoog over onszelf opgeven, want daarmee lokken wij alleen maar rivaliteit en jaloezie uit.
