Hebrews 13

1 Let love of the brethren continue.2 Forget not to show love unto strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.3 Remember them that are in bonds, as bound with them; them that are illtreated, as being yourselves also in the body.4 Let marriage be had in honor among all, and let the bed be undefiled: for fornicators and adulterers God will judge.5 Be ye free from the love of money; content with such things as ye have: for himself hath said, I will in no wise fail thee, neither will I in any wise forsake thee.6 So that with good courage we say, The Lord is my helper; I will not fear: What shall man do unto me?

7 Remember them that had the rule over you, men that spake unto you the word of God; and considering the issue of their life, imitate their faith.8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and to-day, yea and for ever.9 Be not carried away by divers and strange teachings: for it is good that the heart be established by grace; not by meats, wherein they that occupied themselves were not profited.10 We have an altar, whereof they have no right to eat that serve the tabernacle.11 For the bodies of those beasts whose blood is brought into the holy place by the high priest as an offering for sin, are burned without the camp.12 Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people through his own blood, suffered without the gate.13 Let us therefore go forth unto him without the camp, bearing his reproach.14 For we have not here an abiding city, but we seek after the city which is to come.15 Through him then let us offer up a sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of lips which make confession to his name.16 But to do good and to communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.17 Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit to them: for they watch in behalf of your souls, as they that shall give account; that they may do this with joy, and not with grief: for this were unprofitable for you.18 Pray for us: for we are persuaded that we have a good conscience, desiring to live honorably in all things.19 And I exhort you the more exceedingly to do this, that I may be restored to you the sooner.20 Now the God of peace, who brought again from the dead the great shepherd of the sheep with the blood of an eternal covenant, even our Lord Jesus,21 make you perfect in every good thing to do his will, working in us that which is well-pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be the glory for ever and ever. Amen.22 But I exhort you, brethren, bear with the word of exhortation, for I have written unto you in few words.23 Know ye that our brother Timothy hath been set at liberty; with whom, if he come shortly, I will see you.24 Salute all them that have the rule over you, and all the saints. They of Italy salute you.25 Grace be with you all. Amen.

Leven in afhankelijkheid van Gods genade

1 Blijf als broeders en zusters van elkaar houden.2 Wees altijd gastvrij voor vreemdelingen, daardoor hebben sommigen, zonder het zich bewust te zijn, engelen in huis gehad.3 Denk aan de mensen die in de gevangenis zitten, alsof u zelf gevangen was. Denk ook aan de mensen die mishandeld worden. Omdat u zelf ook een lichaam hebt, kunt u met hen meevoelen.

4 Laat iedereen het huwelijk in ere houden. Man en vrouw moeten elkaar trouw blijven. Wie overspel pleegt, zal door God gestraft worden.
5 Laat u niet door het geld in beslag nemen. Wees tevreden met wat u hebt, want God heeft gezegd: ‘Ik zal altijd voor u zorgen, Ik zal u nooit in de steek laten.’6 Daarom kunnen wij goede moed hebben en zeggen: ‘De Here helpt mij, daarom hoef ik niet bang te zijn voor wat een mens mij kan aandoen.’7 Vergeet de voorgangers niet die u het woord van God hebben doorgegeven. Kijk eens hoe zij geleefd hebben en gestorven zijn, vertrouw net zo op God als zij deden.

8 Jezus Christus was, is en blijft voor altijd Dezelfde.
9 Laat u daarom niet meeslepen door allerlei vreemde ideeën. Voor onze geestelijke kracht zijn wij alleen afhankelijk van de genade van God en niet van allerlei regels voor eten en drinken, want de mensen die op regels vertrouwden, hebben er niets aan gehad.10 Wij hebben een altaar waarvan niet gegeten mag worden door mensen die in dienst staan van het oude verbond.11 Onder dat verbond bracht de hogepriester het bloed van een geslacht dier in de tempel, als een offer voor de zonden. Maar het lichaam van het dier werd buiten het kamp verbrand.12 Daarom is ook Jezus buiten de stad een vreselijke dood gestorven, om ons door zijn bloed voor God af te zonderen en onze zonden weg te doen.13 Laten wij dan naar Hem toe gaan, buiten de stad en dezelfde schande dragen die Hij gedragen heeft.14 Wij horen immers niet in deze wereld thuis, wij kijken uit naar de toekomstige stad.15 Met de hulp van Jezus zullen wij God altijd blijven eren, en ons offer aan God is dat wij openlijk voor Jezus uitkomen.

16 Wees goed voor anderen en deel uw bezit met hen, want dat zijn offers die God waardeert.

17 Gehoorzaam uw voorgangers en doe wat zij zeggen. Het is hun taak over u te waken, zij zullen voor God verantwoording moeten afleggen over wat zij hebben gedaan. Als u hen gehoorzaamt, zullen zij hun werk met voldoening kunnen doen, zonder veel zorgen en moeite. Maar als u hen niet gehoorzaamt, doet u daarmee uzelf tekort.
18 Bid voor ons, want wij vertrouwen dat wij een zuiver geweten hebben en willen dat houden.

19 Doe dit vooral opdat God mij snel de gelegenheid zal geven naar u terug te keren.
20 Ik bid dat de God van de vrede, die de Here Jezus, onze grote Herder, door het bloed van het eeuwige verbond uit de dood heeft laten opstaan,

21 u alles zal geven wat nodig is om zijn wil te doen. Dat Hij ons zó zal maken dat Hij, door Jezus Christus, tevreden over ons kan zijn. Aan Jezus Christus komt voor altijd en eeuwig alle eer toe. Amen.

22 Ik smeek u, broeders en zusters, mijn vermanende woorden in deze brief, waarin ik u kort schreef, ter harte te nemen.
23 Het zal u goed doen te horen dat onze broeder Timotheüs weer uit de gevangenis is. Als hij hier op tijd komt, zal ik u samen met hem bezoeken.24 Doe de groeten aan al uw voorgangers en aan de andere gelovigen. U ontvangt de groeten van de christenen in Italië.

25 Ik wens u allen Gods genade toe.
