James 4

1 Whence come wars and whence come fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your pleasures that war in your members?2 Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and covet, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war; ye have not, because ye ask not.3 Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may spend it in your pleasures.4 Ye adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? Whosoever therefore would be a friend of the world maketh himself an enemy of God.5 Or think ye that the scripture speaketh in vain? Doth the spirit which he made to dwell in us long unto envying?6 But he giveth more grace. Wherefore the scripture saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace to the humble.7 Be subject therefore unto God; but resist the devil, and he will flee from you.8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye doubleminded.9 Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness.10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall exalt you.11 Speak not one against another, brethren. He that speaketh against a brother, or judgeth his brother, speaketh against the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judgest the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge.12 One only is the lawgiver and judge, even he who is able to save and to destroy: but who art thou that judgest thy neighbor?13 Come now, ye that say, To-day or to-morrow we will go into this city, and spend a year there, and trade, and get gain:14 whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. What is your life? For ye are a vapor, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.15 For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall both live, and do this or that.16 But now ye glory in your vauntings: all such glorying is evil.17 To him therefore that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.

Dichter bij God

1 Maar hoe komt het dan dat u altijd ruzie maakt en vecht? Omdat er slechte verlangens in u zijn die u daartoe aanzetten.2 U verlangt naar iets dat u niet hebt, u bent tot moord geneigd en jaloers en dat levert u niets op. U bent strijdlustig en oorlogszuchtig. Maar de enige reden dat u niet hebt wat u wilt, is omdat u God er niet om vraagt.3 Of u bidt Hem er wel om, maar krijgt niets. Wel, dan hebt u het Hem op een verkeerde manier gevraagd. Als u Hem alleen iets voor uw eigen genoegen vraagt, geeft Hij het niet.4 Bedriegers, weet u niet dat als u vriendschap met de wereld sluit, dit betekent dat u een vijand van God bent? Wie voor de wereld kiest, maakt zichzelf tot vijand van God.5 Er staat niet voor niets in de Boeken: ‘God wil de geest die Hij in ons liet wonen, helemaal voor Zich alleen hebben.’

6 Maar Hij geeft ons steeds meer genade. Daarom staat er in de Boeken: ‘God keert Zich tegen de hoogmoedigen, maar Hij is genadig voor wie nederig is.’
7 Onderwerp u dus aan God, maar verzet u tegen de duivel en hij zal van u wegvluchten.8 Ga dichter naar God toe, dan komt God dichter bij u. Was uw handen, zondaars, u die op twee gedachten hinkt, laat uw hart zuiver voor God zijn.9 Beklaag uzelf, huil en jammer van ellende. Het lachen moet u vergaan, uw blijdschap moet omslaan in verdriet.10 Als u beseft dat u klein bent voor de Here, zal Hij u verheffen.11 Spreek geen kwaad van elkaar, broeders en zusters, en veroordeel elkaar niet. Want als u dat doet, veroordeelt u de wet van God die zegt dat wij elkaar moeten liefhebben. Het is niet aan u om uit te maken of die wet goed of slecht is. Wat u moet doen, is die wet gehoorzamen!

12 De enige die mag oordelen, is degene die ons die wet heeft gegeven. Hij kan ons redden of ons verloren laten gaan. Met welk recht veroordeelt u dan uw medemens?
13 Er zijn mensen onder u die zeggen: ‘Vandaag of morgen gaan we naar die en die stad om zaken te doen. Wij zullen er een jaar blijven en goed winst maken.’14 Hoe weet u wat er morgen met u zal gebeuren? Uw leven lijkt op een damp, die er nu is en straks weer verdwijnt.15 U kunt beter zeggen: ‘Als de Here het wil, zullen wij leven en dit of dat doen.’16 Maar de manier waarop u nu praat, getuigt van zelfingenomenheid. Dat is niet goed.

17 Als u weet dat u iets moet doen maar het nalaat, zondigt u.
