Jeremiah 5

1 Run ye to and fro through the streets of Jerusalem, and see now, and know, and seek in the broad places thereof, if ye can find a man, if there be any that doeth justly, that seeketh truth; and I will pardon her.2 And though they say, As Jehovah liveth; surely they swear falsely.3 O Jehovah, do not thine eyes look upon truth? thou hast stricken them, but they were not grieved; thou hast consumed them, but they have refused to receive correction: they have made their faces harder than a rock; they have refused to return.4 Then I said, Surely these are poor; they are foolish; for they know not the way of Jehovah, nor the law of their God:5 I will get me unto the great men, and will speak unto them; for they know the way of Jehovah, and the law of their God. But these with one accord have broken the yoke, and burst the bonds.6 Wherefore a lion out of the forest shall slay them, a wolf of the evenings shall destroy them, a leopard shall watch against their cities; every one that goeth out thence shall be torn in pieces; because their transgressions are many, and their backslidings are increased.7 How can I pardon thee? thy children have forsaken me, and sworn by them that are no gods: when I had fed them to the full, they committed adultery, and assembled themselves in troops at the harlots’ houses.8 They were as fed horses roaming at large; every one neighed after his neighbor’s wife.9 Shall I not visit for these things? saith Jehovah; and shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?10 Go ye up upon her walls, and destroy; but make not a full end: take away her branches; for they are not Jehovah’s.11 For the house of Israel and the house of Judah have dealt very treacherously against me, saith Jehovah.12 They have denied Jehovah, and said, It is not he; neither shall evil come upon us; neither shall we see sword nor famine:13 and the prophets shall become wind, and the word is not in them: thus shall it be done unto them.14 Wherefore thus saith Jehovah, the God of hosts, Because ye speak this word, behold, I will make my words in thy mouth fire, and this people wood, and it shall devour them.15 Lo, I will bring a nation upon you from far, O house of Israel, saith Jehovah: it is a mighty nation, it is an ancient nation, a nation whose language thou knowest not, neither understandest what they say.16 Their quiver is an open sepulchre, they are all mighty men.17 And they shall eat up thy harvest, and thy bread, which thy sons and thy daughters should eat; they shall eat up thy flocks and thy herds; they shall eat up thy vines and thy fig-trees; they shall beat down thy fortified cities, wherein thou trustest, with the sword.18 But even in those days, saith Jehovah, I will not make a full end with you.19 And it shall come to pass, when ye shall say, Wherefore hath Jehovah our God done all these things unto us? then shalt thou say unto them, Like as ye have forsaken me, and served foreign gods in your land, so shall ye serve strangers in a land that is not yours.20 Declare ye this in the house of Jacob, and publish it in Judah, saying,21 Hear now this, O foolish people, and without understanding; that have eyes, and see not; that have ears, and hear not:22 Fear ye not me? saith Jehovah: will ye not tremble at my presence, who have placed the sand for the bound of the sea, by a perpetual decree, that it cannot pass it? and though the waves thereof toss themselves, yet can they not prevail; though they roar, yet can they not pass over it.23 But this people hath a revolting and a rebellious heart; they are revolted and gone.24 Neither say they in their heart, Let us now fear Jehovah our God, that giveth rain, both the former and the latter, in its season; that preserveth unto us the appointed weeks of the harvest.25 Your iniquities have turned away these things, and your sins have withholden good from you.26 For among my people are found wicked men: they watch, as fowlers lie in wait; they set a trap, they catch men.27 As a cage is full of birds, so are their houses full of deceit: therefore they are become great, and waxed rich.28 They are waxed fat, they shine: yea, they overpass in deeds of wickedness; they plead not the cause, the cause of the fatherless, that they may prosper; and the right of the needy do they not judge.29 Shall I not visit for these things? saith Jehovah; shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?30 A wonderful and horrible thing is come to pass in the land:31 the prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means; and my people love to have it so: and what will ye do in the end thereof?

Geen ontzag voor God

1 Ren op en neer door elke straat in Jeruzalem, kijk of u ook maar één eerlijke en trouwe man kunt vinden! Zoek op elk plein en als u er één kunt vinden, zal Ik de stad niet verwoesten!

2 Zelfs als zij mijn naam gebruiken om een eed te zweren, liegen zij nog.
3 Och HERE, U wilt niets anders dan de waarheid. U hebt hen geslagen, maar zij hebben geen pijn gevoeld. U hebt hen vernietigd, maar zij weigeren zich te bekeren van hun zonden. Zij zijn vastbesloten met keiharde gezichten geen berouw te tonen.4 Toen zei ik: ‘Maar wat kunnen wij verwachten van de armen die niets weten? Zij kennen Gods geboden niet. Hoe kunnen zij Hem dan gehoorzamen?’5 Daarom zal ik naar hun invloedrijke leiders gaan en met hén spreken, want zij kennen Gods wegen en zijn eisen. Maar ook zij hadden God volledig de rug toegekeerd.6 Daarom zal een leeuw uit het woud hen aanvallen. De woestijnwolf zal hen vernietigen en een luipaard zal rond hun steden sluipen en ieder verscheuren die zich naar buiten waagt. Want hun zonden zijn haast ontelbaar, hun opstandigheid tegen Mij is groot.7 Hoe kan Ik u vergeven? Zelfs uw kinderen hebben zich van Mij afgekeerd en zweren bij goden die geen goden zijn. Ik voedde hen tot zij verzadigd waren, nergens hadden zij gebrek aan en als dank pleegden zij op grote schaal overspel en hielden zich op bij de bordelen van de stad.8 Zij zijn wellustige mannen die lonken naar de vrouw van hun naaste.

9 Moet Ik hen daarvoor niet straffen? Zou Ik zo’n volk nog sparen?
10 Loop tussen de wijnstokken door en vernietig ze! Maar laat een deel staan. Kap de wijnranken af, want zij zijn niet van de HERE.11 ‘De volken van Israël en Juda zijn Mij ontrouw geworden,’ zegt de HERE.12 Zij hebben gelogen en zeiden: ‘Hij zal ons niet lastig vallen! Er zal niets met ons gebeuren! Er komt toch geen hongersnood en geen oorlog!’

13 ‘Gods profeten,’ zeggen zij, ‘zijn windbuilen vol woorden die geen enkel goddelijk gezag hebben. Het oordeel dat zij aankondigen, zal op hun eigen hoofd terechtkomen, niet op het onze!’
14 Daarom zegt de HERE, de God van de hemelse legers: ‘Om dit soort gepraat zal Ik de woorden van de profeten veranderen in een laaiend vuur en deze mensen als stukken hout verbranden.15 Kijk Israël, Ik zal een ver land tegen u ten strijde laten trekken,’ zegt de HERE, ‘een machtig, oud volk, waarvan u de taal niet begrijpt.16 Hun pijlen zijn dodelijk en al hun mannen zijn machtige helden.17 Zij zullen uw oogst verslinden en het brood van uw kinderen en ook uw schapen en runderen opeten. Ja, ook van uw druiven en vijgen zullen zij niets overlaten. Uw versterkte steden zullen zij met de grond gelijk maken, de steden waarop u vertrouwde.18 Zelfs dan zal Ik u niet volledig laten wegvagen,’ zegt de HERE.

19 En als het volk vraagt: ‘Waarom doet de HERE, onze God, ons dit aan?’ dan moet u antwoorden: ‘U wees Hem af en diende in uw eigen land vreemde goden, nu moet u in vreemde landen slaven zijn van buitenlanders.’
20 Maak dit bekend aan Israël en Juda:21 ‘Luister, dom en ongevoelig volk: u hebt wel ogen, maar u ziet niet en oren, maar u hoort niet.22 Hebt u dan helemaal geen ontzag voor Mij?’ vraagt de HERE God. ‘Hoe kan het dat u niet eens beeft in mijn aanwezigheid? Ik bepaal de kustlijnen van de wereld als eeuwige grenzen, zodat de zeeën met hun geweld en bulderende golven die afscheidingen nooit kunnen overschrijden. Moet zo’n God niet worden gevreesd en vereerd?23-24 Maar mijn volk is koppig en opstandig, het heeft zich tegen Mij gekeerd en is weggelopen. Ook al geef Ik regen in de lente en de herfst en tijd voor de oogsten, toch heeft het geen ontzag voor Mij.25 Daarom heb Ik u deze zegeningen vanwege uw zonden afgenomen.26 Onder mijn volk bevinden zich slechte mensen die loeren op slachtoffers, als een jager die met netten vanuit een hinderlaag vogels vangt. Zij zetten vallen voor mensen.27 Als een mand, volgepropt met vogels, zo zijn hun huizen volgepropt met bedrog. En het resultaat? Zij zijn nu machtig en rijk,28 zien er keurig uit en zijn weldoorvoed. Hun slechtheid kent geen grenzen. Zij zijn onrechtvaardig tegenover de wezen en negeren de rechten van de armen.29 Moet Ik dan maar rustig afwachten en doen alsof er niets aan de hand is?’ vraagt de HERE God. ‘Moet Ik zo’n volk niet straffen?’30 Er gebeuren vreselijke dingen in dit land:

31 de priesters staan onder invloed van valse profeten en mijn volk vindt het wel best zo! Maar hun uiteindelijke lot staat vast.
