John 17

1 These things spake Jesus; and lifting up his eyes to heaven, he said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that the son may glorify thee:2 even as thou gavest him authority over all flesh, that to all whom thou hast given him, he should give eternal life.3 And this is life eternal, that they should know thee the only true God, and him whom thou didst send, even Jesus Christ.4 I glorified thee on the earth, having accomplished the work which thou hast given me to do.5 And now, Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.6 I manifested thy name unto the men whom thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them to me; and they have kept thy word.7 Now they know that all things whatsoever thou hast given me are from thee:8 for the words which thou gavest me I have given unto them; and they received them, and knew of a truth that I came forth from thee, and they believed that thou didst send me.9 I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for those whom thou hast given me; for they are thine:10 and all things that are mine are thine, and thine are mine: and I am glorified in them.11 And I am no more in the world, and these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep them in thy name which thou hast given me, that they may be one, even as we are.12 While I was with them, I kept them in thy name which thou hast given me: and I guarded them, and not one of them perished, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled.13 But now I come to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy made full in themselves.14 I have given them thy word; and the world hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.15 I pray not that thou shouldest take them from the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil one.16 They are not of the world even as I am not of the world.17 Sanctify them in the truth: thy word is truth.18 As thou didst send me into the world, even so sent I them into the world.19 And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they themselves also may be sanctified in truth.20 Neither for these only do I pray, but for them also that believe on me through their word;21 that they may all be one; even as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be in us: that the world may believe that thou didst send me.22 And the glory which thou hast given me I have given unto them; that they may be one, even as we are one;23 I in them, and thou in me, that they may be perfected into one; that the world may know that thou didst send me, and lovedst them, even as thou lovedst me.24 Father, I desire that they also whom thou hast given me be with me where I am, that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world.25 O righteous Father, the world knew thee not, but I knew thee; and these knew that thou didst send me;26 and I made known unto them thy name, and will make it known; that the love wherewith thou lovedst me may be in them, and I in them.

Jezus bidt tot zijn Vader

1 Nadat Jezus dit gezegd had, keek Hij omhoog naar de hemel en zei: ‘Vader, het is zover. Laat zien hoe groot en machtig uw Zoon is, dan kan Hij laten zien hoe groot en machtig U bent.2 U hebt Hem macht gegeven over alle mensen, om aan ieder die U Hem hebt toevertrouwd, eeuwig leven te geven.3 Het eeuwige leven is dat zij U, de enig ware God, kennen en degene die U naar de aarde hebt gestuurd, Jezus Christus.4 Ik heb de mensen laten zien hoe groot uw macht en majesteit zijn. Daarmee heb Ik gedaan wat U Mij had opgedragen.

5 Vader, laat Mij nu bij U terugkomen om de eer en de heerlijkheid te ontvangen die Ik voor het ontstaan van de wereld al had.
6 Door wat Ik gedaan en gezegd heb, weten deze mensen nu wie U bent. Zij waren van U en U hebt hen aan Mij gegeven. Zij hebben zich gehouden aan wat U zei.7 Zij weten dat alles wat Ik heb van U komt.8 Want wat U Mij hebt verteld, heb Ik aan hen doorgegeven en zij hebben het aanvaard. Zij zijn tot het geloof en de overtuiging gekomen dat U Mij hebt gestuurd.9 Ik bid voor hen. Niet voor de wereld, maar voor hen die U Mij hebt toevertrouwd. Zij zijn van U.10 Alles wat van Mij is, is van U. En wat van U is, is van Mij. In hen wordt weerspiegeld wie Ik ben.11 Ik verlaat de wereld en kom bij U, maar zij blijven nog in de wereld. Heilige Vader, bescherm hen in uw naam, de naam die U ook aan Mij gegeven hebt, zodat zij één kunnen zijn zoals Wij.

12 Zolang Ik bij hen was, beschermde Ik hen in uw naam die U Mij hebt gegeven. Ik heb geen van hen verloren laten gaan, behalve degene die verloren moest gaan. Daardoor werd werkelijkheid wat in de Boeken stond.
13 Nu kom Ik bij U. Ik zeg dit allemaal terwijl Ik nog in de wereld ben, omdat Ik wil dat zij vol zullen zijn van de blijdschap die Ik heb.14 Ik heb hun doorgegeven wat U verteld hebt. De wereld haat hen omdat zij, net als Ik, niet bij de wereld horen.15 Ik vraag U niet hen uit de wereld weg te nemen, maar hen te beschermen tegen de duivel.16 Zij horen net zo min bij de wereld als Ik.17 Maak hen zuiver en heilig door hen te onderwijzen in uw woord van waarheid.18 Ik stuur hen de wereld in, zoals U Mij de wereld hebt ingestuurd.

19 Ik wijd mijn leven aan hen, om hen door de waarheid aan U te wijden.
20 Wat Ik U vraag, is niet alleen voor hen. Het is ook voor de mensen die door hen in Mij zullen gaan geloven.21 Ik vraag U, Vader, of zij net zo één mogen zijn als U en Ik. U bent in Mij en Ik ben in U. Laat hen ook zo in Ons zijn. Dan zal de wereld geloven dat U Mij gestuurd hebt.22 Ik heb hun dezelfde eer gegeven als U Mij gegeven hebt, om hen zo één te laten zijn als U en Ik.

23 Doordat Ik in hen ben en U in Mij bent, zullen zij een volmaakte eenheid zijn. Dan zal de wereld erkennen dat U Mij gestuurd hebt en dat U net zoveel van hen houdt als van Mij.
24 Vader, U hebt hen aan Mij gegeven. Ik wil dat zij bij Mij zullen zijn om mijn schitterende majesteit te zien. U hebt Mij die majesteit gegeven, omdat U al van Mij hield voor het ontstaan van de wereld.25 Rechtvaardige Vader, al kent de wereld U niet, Ik ken U. En mijn leerlingen weten dat U Mij gestuurd hebt.

26 Ik heb hun verteld wie U bent en zal dat blijven doen. Want Ik wil dat uw liefde voor Mij in hen zal zijn, en dat Ikzelf ook in hen zal zijn.’
