Romans 13

1 Let every soul be in subjection to the higher powers: for there is no power but of God; and the powers that be are ordained of God.2 Therefore he that resisteth the power, withstandeth the ordinance of God: and they that withstand shall receive to themselves judgment.3 For rulers are not a terror to the good work, but to the evil. And wouldest thou have no fear of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise from the same:4 for he is a minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is a minister of God, an avenger for wrath to him that doeth evil.5 Wherefore ye must needs be in subjection, not only because of the wrath, but also for conscience’ sake.6 For this cause ye pay tribute also; for they are ministers of God’s service, attending continually upon this very thing.7 Render to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honor to whom honor.8 Owe no man anything, save to love one another: for he that loveth his neighbor hath fulfilled the law.9 For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not covet, and if there be any other commandment, it is summed up in this word, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.10 Love worketh no ill to his neighbor: love therefore is the fulfilment of the law.11 And this, knowing the season, that already it is time for you to awake out of sleep: for now is salvation nearer to us than when we first believed.12 The night is far spent, and the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light.13 Let us walk becomingly, as in the day; not in revelling and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and jealousy.14 But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.

Gehoorzaam de overheid

1 Iedereen moet zich aan het gezag onderwerpen, want er is geen autoriteit die niet door God is ingesteld. Alle gezag komt van God.2 Als iemand zich tegen het gezag verzet, verzet hij zich eigenlijk tegen God. En het is dan ook zijn eigen schuld als hij gestraft wordt.

3 Wie zich goed gedraagt, hoeft niet bang te zijn voor mensen die namens de overheid optreden, maar wie verkeerde dingen doet wél. Dus als u niet bang voor hen wilt zijn, moet u doen wat goed is. Dan zult u daarvoor eer ontvangen.
4 Want het gezag staat in dienst van God om u te helpen en te beschermen. Maar ieder die iets verkeerds doet, ondervindt daarvan de gevolgen. Het gezag is er niet voor niets, het staat in dienst van God om de mensen die verkeerde dingen doen, te straffen.5 Doe daarom wat de overheid zegt, niet alleen uit vrees voor straf, maar ook om een zuiver geweten te houden.6 Daarom betaalt u ook belasting, want de mensen die in dienst staan van de overheid, zijn eigenlijk in dienst van God. Zij letten er op of er wel belasting wordt betaald.

7 Geef ieder wat hem toekomt. Als u belasting of invoerrechten moet betalen, doe dat dan. Als iemand een hoge positie heeft, laat dan merken dat u respect voor hem hebt.
8 Wij mogen bij niemand in de schuld staan. Maar één ding blijven we elkaar schuldig en dat is de liefde. Wie zijn medemens liefheeft, voldoet daarmee aan de wetten van God.

9 Alle voorschriften die God aan Mozes heeft gegeven, zoals: ‘U mag geen overspel plegen, u mag niemand doodslaan, u mag niet stelen, u mag niet iets begeren wat van een ander is,’ worden in dit ene gebod vervuld: ‘Heb uw naaste net zo lief als uzelf.’
10 Wie van zijn medemens houdt, doet hem geen kwaad. Als er werkelijk liefde is, worden de andere voorschriften overbodig.11 U moet niet vergeten in wat voor tijd wij leven. Het is tijd om wakker te worden. Sta op! Onze bevrijding is nu dichterbij dan toen wij pas gelovig werden.12 De nacht is bijna voorbij, dan breekt de dag aan. Houd dus op met wat het daglicht niet kan verdragen. Doe voortaan alleen maar wat gezien mag worden.13 Leef zuiver, zoals het hoort. Doe niet mee aan allerlei uitspattingen, waarbij eten, drank en seks centraal staan. Maak geen ruzie en wees niet jaloers.

14 Omkleed uzelf met de Here Jezus Christus en schenk geen aandacht aan de menselijke natuur. Laat uw leven beheerst worden door de Here Jezus Christus en geef niet toe aan uw eigen wil, die alleen maar leidt tot verkeerde verlangens.
