1 Wherefore thou art without excuse, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judges another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest dost practise the same things.2 And we know that the judgment of God is according to truth against them that practise such things.3 And reckonest thou this, O man, who judgest them that practise such things, and doest the same, that thou shalt escape the judgment of God?4 Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?5 but after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up for thyself wrath in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;6 who will render to every man according to his works:7 to them that by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and incorruption, eternal life:8 but unto them that are factious, and obey not the truth, but obey unrighteousness, shall be wrath and indignation,9 tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that worketh evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Greek;10 but glory and honor and peace to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Greek:11 for there is no respect of persons with God.12 For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without the law: and as many as have sinned under the law shall be judged by the law;13 for not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified:14 (for when Gentiles that have not the law do by nature the things of the law, these, not having the law, are the law unto themselves;15 in that they show the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience bearing witness therewith, and their thoughts one with another accusing or else excusing them);16 in the day when God shall judge the secrets of men, according to my gospel, by Jesus Christ.17 But if thou bearest the name of a Jew, and restest upon the law, and gloriest in God,18 and knowest his will, and approvest the things that are excellent, being instructed out of the law,19 and art confident that thou thyself art a guide of the blind, a light of them that are in darkness,20 a corrector of the foolish, a teacher of babes, having in the law the form of knowledge and of the truth;21 thou therefore that teachest another, teachest thou not thyself? thou that preachest a man should not steal, dost thou steal?22 thou that sayest a man should not commit adultery, dost thou commit adultery? thou that abhorrest idols, dost thou rob temples?23 thou who gloriest in the law, through thy transgression of the law dishonorest thou God?24 For the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you, even as it is written.25 For circumcision indeed profiteth, if thou be a doer of the law: but if thou be a transgressor of the law, thy circumcision is become uncircumcision.26 If therefore the uncircumcision keep the ordinances of the law, shall not his uncircumcision be reckoned for circumcision?27 and shall not the uncircumcision which is by nature, if it fulfil the law, judge thee, who with the letter and circumcision art a transgressor of the law?28 For he is not a Jew who is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision which is outward in the flesh:29 but he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.

De straf voor de zonde

1 Maar ook alle andere mensen treft dit oordeel. Want wie een ander veroordeelt, veroordeelt daarmee zichzelf. U doet immers dezelfde dingen?2 Wij weten dat God rechtvaardig oordeelt. Hij geeft ieder die zulke slechte dingen doet een rechtvaardige straf.3 Of denkt u misschien dat u, die anderen veroordeelt voor dingen die u zelf ook doet, Gods straf zult ontlopen?4 Bent u dan niet blij dat God zoveel liefde toont en trouw en geduldig is? Begrijpt u niet dat Hij zo lang met zijn straf wacht om u de kans te geven met de zonde te breken?5 Maar nee, u blijft hardnekkig weigeren uw leven te veranderen. Het is uw eigen schuld als de toorn van God u treft op de dag van het rechtvaardige oordeel.6 Wanneer Hij de wereld oordeelt, zal Hij ieder geven wat hij verdient.

7 Hij geeft eeuwig leven aan hen die geduldig de wil van God doen, op zoek naar de glorie en eer en het leven dat nooit eindigt.
8 Anderzijds zal Hij zijn strenge straf laten neerkomen op hen die alleen maar aan zichzelf denken en die, in plaats van zich aan de waarheid te houden, onrecht doen.9 Wie liever kwaad doet, zal leed en ellende te verduren krijgen. Dat geldt voor iedereen: niet alleen voor de Joden, maar ook voor alle andere mensen.10 Maar ieder die het goede doet, zal door God worden verhoogd en vrede ervaren. Ook dat geldt niet alleen voor de Joden, maar eveneens voor alle andere mensen.

11 Want God maakt geen onderscheid.
12 De mensen die de wet van God niet kennen, gaan verloren zonder dat er naar de wet verwezen wordt. En de mensen die de wet van God wel kennen, worden door de wet veroordeeld.13 Om voor God vrijuit te gaan, moet u doen wat Hij wil, of u zijn wet nu kent of niet.14 Hoewel er veel volken zijn die de geschreven wet van God niet hebben, doen die van nature toch wat God wil. Daaruit blijkt dat zij weten wat goed en kwaad is.15 De wet van God staat in hun hart geschreven. Hun geweten vertelt hun wat zij moeten doen: hun gedachten klagen hen de ene keer aan en spreken hen de andere keer vrij.16 Dit is het goede nieuws dat ik breng: er komt een dag dat Christus Jezus in opdracht van God zijn oordeel uit zal spreken over het verborgen leven van de mensen, over hun diepste gedachten.17 En u, die er trots op bent Joden te zijn, vertrouwt op de geschreven wet van God! U bent er trots op dat u de enige, ware God kent en weet wat Hij wil.18 Omdat u onderwijs uit de wet krijgt, kunt u onderscheiden wat goed is.19 Daarom beschouwt u zich als mensen die blinden op de goede weg leiden, als een licht voor hen die in het duister leven.20 Omdat in Gods wet de waarheid en de kennis onder woorden zijn gebracht, denkt u buitenstaanders en kinderen iets te kunnen leren.

21 Maar als u anderen onderwijst, waarom onderwijst u zichzelf dan niet? U beweert dat men niet mag stelen. Steelt u zelf dan niet?
22 U zegt dat men geen overspel mag plegen. Maar wat doet u zelf? U zegt dat u een grote afkeer van afgoden hebt. Toch profiteert u van de tempel!23 U gaat er prat op Gods wet te kennen. Maar waarom maakt u God dan te schande door zijn wet te overtreden?24 Er staat niet voor niets in de Boeken: ‘Het is uw schuld dat de naam van God over de hele wereld door het slijk gehaald wordt!’25 Uiteraard heeft uw besnijdenis naar de Joodse wet alleen waarde als u zich aan de wet houdt.26 Maar als u dat niet doet, bent u niet beter af dan de mensen die geen Jood zijn. Als niet-Joden zich aan de wet houden, zal God hun dan ook niet alles geven wat Hij de Joden beloofd heeft?27 Zij die niet van geboorte Jood zijn, maar wel de wet van God naleven, zullen u – die de wet kent, maar niet houdt – veroordelen.28 Dat u als Jood geboren bent en volgens Joods gebruik besneden, wil nog niet zeggen dat u een echte Jood bent.

29 Nee, een echte Jood is iemand die zich in zijn hart met God verbonden heeft. Het gaat er niet om of u lichamelijk besneden bent, maar of uw hart en gedachten voor God geopend zijn. Dat is besnijdenis door de Geest, niet volgens de letter van de wet. Iedereen die zo’n levensverandering heeft ondergaan, krijgt zijn eer van God, niet van mensen.
