1 Kings 18

1 And it came to pass after many days, that the word of Jehovah came to Elijah, in the third year, saying, Go, show thyself unto Ahab; and I will send rain upon the earth.2 And Elijah went to show himself unto Ahab. And the famine was sore in Samaria.3 And Ahab called Obadiah, who was over the household. (Now Obadiah feared Jehovah greatly:4 for it was so, when Jezebel cut off the prophets of Jehovah, that Obadiah took a hundred prophets, and hid them by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water.)5 And Ahab said unto Obadiah, Go through the land, unto all the fountains of water, and unto all the brooks: peradventure we may find grass and save the horses and mules alive, that we lose not all the beasts.6 So they divided the land between them to pass throughout it: Ahab went one way by himself, and Obadiah went another way by himself.

7 And as Obadiah was in the way, behold, Elijah met him: and he knew him, and fell on his face, and said, Is it thou, my lord Elijah?8 And he answered him, It is I: go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here.9 And he said, Wherein have I sinned, that thou wouldest deliver thy servant into the hand of Ahab, to slay me?10 As Jehovah thy God liveth, there is no nation or kingdom, whither my lord hath not sent to seek thee: and when they said, He is not here, he took an oath of the kingdom and nation, that they found thee not.11 And now thou sayest, Go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here.12 And it will come to pass, as soon as I am gone from thee, that the Spirit of Jehovah will carry thee whither I know not; and so when I come and tell Ahab, and he cannot find thee, he will slay me: but I thy servant fear Jehovah from my youth.13 Was it not told my lord what I did when Jezebel slew the prophets of Jehovah, how I hid a hundred men of Jehovah’s prophets by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water?14 And now thou sayest, Go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here; and he will slay me.15 And Elijah said, As Jehovah of hosts liveth, before whom I stand, I will surely show myself unto him to-day.

16 So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him; and Ahab went to meet Elijah.17 And it came to pass, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said unto him, Is it thou, thou troubler of Israel?18 And he answered, I have not troubled Israel; but thou, and thy father’s house, in that ye have forsaken the commandments of Jehovah, and thou hast followed the Baalim.19 Now therefore send, and gather to me all Israel unto mount Carmel, and the prophets of Baal four hundred and fifty, and the prophets of the Asherah four hundred, that eat at Jezebel’s table.

20 So Ahab sent unto all the children of Israel, and gathered the prophets together unto mount Carmel.21 And Elijah came near unto all the people, and said, How long go ye limping between the two sides? if Jehovah be God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word.22 Then said Elijah unto the people, I, even I only, am left a prophet of Jehovah; but Baal’s prophets are four hundred and fifty men.23 Let them therefore give us two bullocks; and let them choose one bullock for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on the wood, and put no fire under; and I will dress the other bullock, and lay it on the wood, and put no fire under.24 And call ye on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of Jehovah; and the God that answereth by fire, let him be God. And all the people answered and said, It is well spoken.

25 And Elijah said unto the prophets of Baal, Choose you one bullock for yourselves, and dress it first; for ye are many; and call on the name of your god, but put no fire under.26 And they took the bullock which was given them, and they dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, O Baal, hear us. But there was no voice, nor any that answered. And they leaped about the altar which was made.27 And it came to pass at noon, that Elijah mocked them, and said, Cry aloud; for he is a god: either he is musing, or he is gone aside, or he is on a journey, or peradventure he sleepeth and must be awaked.28 And they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lances, till the blood gushed out upon them.29 And it was so, when midday was past, that they prophesied until the time of the offering of the evening oblation; but there was neither voice, nor any to answer, nor any that regarded.

30 And Elijah said unto all the people, Come near unto me; and all the people came near unto him. And he repaired the altar of Jehovah that was thrown down.31 And Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, unto whom the word of Jehovah came, saying, Israel shall be thy name.32 And with the stones he built an altar in the name of Jehovah; and he made a trench about the altar, as great as would contain two measures of seed.33 And he put the wood in order, and cut the bullock in pieces, and laid it on the wood. And he said, Fill four jars with water, and pour it on the burnt-offering, and on the wood.34 And he said, Do it the second time; and they did it the second time. And he said, Do it the third time; and they did it the third time.35 And the water ran round about the altar; and he filled the trench also with water.36 And it came to pass at the time of the offering of the evening oblation, that Elijah the prophet came near, and said, O Jehovah, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that I have done all these things at thy word.37 Hear me, O Jehovah, hear me, that this people may know that thou, Jehovah, art God, and that thou hast turned their heart back again.38 Then the fire of Jehovah fell, and consumed the burnt-offering, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.39 And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces: and they said, Jehovah, he is God; Jehovah, he is God.40 and Elijah said unto them, Take the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape. And they took them; and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and slew them there.

41 And Elijah said unto Ahab, Get thee up, eat and drink; for there is the sound of abundance of rain.42 So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; and he bowed himself down upon the earth, and put his face between his knees.43 And he said to his servant, Go up now, look toward the sea. And he went up, and looked, and said, There is nothing. And he said, Go again seven times.44 And it came to pass at the seventh time, that he said, Behold, there ariseth a cloud out of the sea, as small as a man’s hand. And he said, Go up, say unto Ahab, Make ready thy chariot, and get thee down, that the rain stop thee not.45 And it came to pass in a little while, that the heavens grew black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode, and went to Jezreel:46 and the hand of Jehovah was on Elijah; and he girded up his loins, and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.

Elia og slottshøvdingen Obadja

1 Så gikk det lang tid. I det tredje året kom Herrens ord til Elia, og det lød så: «Gå og tre fram for Akab! Nå vil jeg sende regn over jorden.» t

2 Elia gikk av sted og trådte fram for Akab.
Det var stor hungersnød i Samaria. 3 Da kalte Akab til seg Obadja, som var slottshøvding. Obadja var en meget gudfryktig mann. 4 Den gang Jesabel utryddet Herrens profeter, tok han hundre profeter og skjulte dem i to huler, femti mann i hver hule, og sørget for mat og drikke til dem. 5 Nå sa Akab til ham: «Kom, la oss dra gjennom landet, til alle kilder og bekker! Kanskje vi da finner gress, så vi kan holde hestene og muldyrene i live og slipper å slakte noen av dyrene.»

6 Så delte de landet mellom seg; de skulle dra gjennom det hver for seg. Akab fór én vei og Obadja en annen.
7 Mens Obadja var underveis, møtte han Elia. Med det samme han drog kjensel på ham, kastet han seg ned og sa: «Er det deg, min herre Elia?» 8 Han svarte: «Ja, det er meg. Gå og si til din herre at Elia er her.» 9 Men Obadja sa: «Hva ondt har jeg gjort, siden du vil gi meg i hendene på Akab og la ham drepe meg? 10 Så sant Herren din Gud lever: Det fins ikke det folk eller rike som min herre ikke har sendt bud til for å lete etter deg. Når de så sa at du ikke var der, lot han det rike og folk avlegge ed på at de ikke kunne finne deg. 11 Og nå sier du at jeg skal gå og fortelle min herre at Elia er her. 12 Når jeg nå går fra deg, vil kanskje Herrens Ånd rykke deg bort til et sted som jeg ikke vet om. Kommer jeg så og sier fra til Akab, og han ikke finner deg, vil han drepe meg. Og jeg, din tjener, har da fryktet Herren helt fra ungdommen av. t 13 Har du ikke hørt, herre, hva jeg gjorde den gang Jesabel drepte Herrens profeter? Da skjulte jeg hundre mann i to huler, femti mann i hver hule, og sørget for mat og drikke til dem. 14 Og nå sier du at jeg skal gå og fortelle min herre at Elia er her. Da vil han drepe meg!»

15 Da sa Elia: «Så sant han lever, Herren, Allhærs Gud, som jeg tjener: I dag vil jeg tre fram for kongen.»

16 Så gikk Obadja sin vei. Han møtte Akab og fortalte ham dette, og Akab gikk for å møte Elia.

Elia på Karmel

20 Så sendte Akab bud omkring til alle israelittene og stevnet profetene sammen på Karmel-fjellet.
21 Elia trådte fram for hele folket og sa: «Hvor lenge vil dere halte til begge sider? Er Herren Gud, så hold dere til ham; og er Ba’al Gud, så hold dere til ham!» Men folket svarte ikke et ord. t 22 Da sa Elia til dem: «Jeg er den eneste som er igjen av Herrens profeter. Men av Ba’als profeter er det fire hundre og femti. t 23 La oss nå få to okser! Så kan de velge seg den ene oksen, dele den opp og legge den på veden; men de må ikke tenne ild på. Og jeg skal stelle til den andre oksen og legge den på veden, men ikke tenne ild. 24 Så kan dere kalle på guden deres, og jeg vil kalle på Herren. Den guden som da svarer med ild, han er Gud.» Hele folket svarte: «Ja, la det være slik!» 25 Da sa Elia til Ba’al-profetene: «Velg dere en av oksene og stell den til først, siden dere er flest! Kall så på guden deres, men tenn ikke ild!»

26 Så tok de den oksen han hadde gitt dem, stelte den til og ropte på Ba’al fra morgen til middag. «Svar oss, Ba’al!» sa de. Men det kom ikke en lyd; det var ingen som svarte. Imens hinket de omkring det alteret de hadde reist.t
27 Da det var blitt middag, begynte Elia å spotte dem og sa: «Rop høyere! Han er jo gud. Han er vel falt i tanker, eller han er gått avsides eller er ute på reise. Kanskje han sover og må våkne først.» 28 Så ropte de enda høyere og rispet seg med sverd og spyd, som de hadde for skikk, til blodet rant ned over dem. t

29 Da det led over middag, kom de i profetisk henrykkelse. Slik holdt de på til den tid da grødeofferet blir båret fram. Men det kom ikke en lyd; det var ingen som svarte og ingen som enste dem.t t
30 Da sa Elia til folkemengden: «Kom hit til meg!» Og hele folket gikk bort til ham. Så bygde han opp igjen Herrens alter, som var revet ned. 31 Han tok tolv steiner, en for hver av stammene etter sønnene til Jakob, han som Herren hadde talt dette ordet til: «Israel skal være ditt navn.» t 32 Av disse steinene bygde han et alter i Herrens navn. Og rundt omkring alteret gravde han en grøft så stor at den svarte til en åker som tar to mål såkorn. t 33 Han la veden til rette, delte opp oksen og la den oppå veden. 34 Så sa han: «Fyll fire krukker med vann og øs det ut over brennofferet og veden!» Og han sa: «Gjør det en gang til!» Så gjorde de det for annen gang. Da sa han: «Gjør det enda en gang!» Så gjorde de det for tredje gang.

35 Vannet fløt rundt omkring alteret. Til og med grøften fylte han med vann.
36 Da tiden for grødeofferet var kommet, trådte profeten Elia fram og sa: «Herre, Abrahams, Isaks og Israels Gud! La det i dag bli kjent at du er Gud i Israel, at jeg er din tjener, og at det er på ditt ord jeg har gjort alt dette. 37 Svar meg, Herre! Svar meg, så dette folket kan skjønne at du, Herre, er Gud, og at du vender deres hjerte til deg igjen.» 38 Da fór Herrens ild ned og fortærte både offeret og veden, steinene og jorden, og slikket opp vannet som var i grøften. t 39 Da folket så det, kastet de seg til jorden og sa: «Herren, han er Gud! Herren, han er Gud!» t

40 Elia sa til dem: «Grip Ba’al-profetene! La ikke én av dem slippe unna!» Da grep de Ba’als profeter, og Elia førte dem ned til Kisjon-bekken og drepte dem der.t
41 Siden sa Elia til Akab: «Nå kan du gå opp og spise og drikke; for jeg hører suset av regn.» 42 Da gikk Akab opp og holdt måltid. Og Elia gikk opp på toppen av Karmel og bøyde seg mot jorden med ansiktet mellom knærne. 43 Så sa han til tjeneren sin: «Gå opp og se ut mot havet!» Gutten gikk opp og så utover, men sa: «Det er ingen ting å se.» Sju ganger sa Elia: «Gå opp igjen!» 44 Den sjuende gangen sa gutten: «Jeg ser en liten sky som stiger opp av havet. Den er ikke større enn neven på en mann.» Da sa Elia: «Gå og si til Akab at han må spenne for og dra hjem, så regnet ikke skal hefte ham.» 45 På et øyeblikk mørknet himmelen til med skyer og storm, og det begynte å stridregne. Akab steg opp i vognen sin og kjørte til Jisre’el. t 46 Da kom Herrens hånd over Elia. Han spente beltet om livet og løp foran Akab helt til Jisre’el.
