1 Samuel 13

1 Saul was forty years old when he began to reign; and when he had reigned two years over Israel,2 Saul chose him three thousand men of Israel, whereof two thousand were with Saul in Michmash and in the mount of Beth-el, and a thousand were with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin: and the rest of the people he sent every man to his tent.3 And Jonathan smote the garrison of the Philistines that was in Geba: and the Philistines heard of it. And Saul blew the trumpet throughout all the land, saying, Let the Hebrews hear.4 And all Israel heard say that Saul had smitten the garrison of the Philistines, and also that Israel was had in abomination with the Philistines. And the people were gathered together after Saul to Gilgal.

5 And the Philistines assembled themselves together to fight with Israel, thirty thousand chariots, and six thousand horsemen, and people as the sand which is on the sea-shore in multitude: and they came up, and encamped in Michmash, eastward of Beth-aven.6 When the men of Israel saw that they were in a strait (for the people were distressed), then the people did hide themselves in caves, and in thickets, and in rocks, and in coverts, and in pits.7 Now some of the Hebrews had gone over the Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead; but as for Saul, he was yet in Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling.

8 And he tarried seven days, according to the set time that Samuel had appointed: but Samuel came not to Gilgal; and the people were scattered from him.9 And Saul said, Bring hither the burnt-offering to me, and the peace-offerings. And he offered the burnt-offering.10 And it came to pass that, as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt-offering, behold, Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might salute him.11 And Samuel said, What hast thou done? And Saul said, Because I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that thou camest not within the days appointed, and that the Philistines assembled themselves together at Michmash;12 therefore said I, Now will the Philistines come down upon me to Gilgal, and I have not entreated the favor of Jehovah: I forced myself therefore, and offered the burnt-offering.13 And Samuel said to Saul, Thou hast done foolishly; thou hast not kept the commandment of Jehovah thy God, which he commanded thee: for now would Jehovah have established thy kingdom upon Israel for ever.14 But now thy kingdom shall not continue: Jehovah hath sought him a man after his own heart, and Jehovah hath appointed him to be prince over his people, because thou hast not kept that which Jehovah commanded thee.15 And Samuel arose, and gat him up from Gilgal unto Gibeah of Benjamin. And Saul numbered the people that were present with him, about six hundred men.16 And Saul, and Jonathan his son, and the people that were present with them, abode in Geba of Benjamin: but the Philistines encamped in Michmash.17 And the spoilers came out of the camp of the Philistines in three companies: one company turned unto the way that leadeth to Ophrah, unto the land of Shual;18 and another company turned the way to Beth-horon; and another company turned the way of the border that looketh down upon the valley of Zeboim toward the wilderness.

19 Now there was no smith found throughout all the land of Israel; for the Philistines said, Lest the Hebrews make them swords or spears:20 but all the Israelites went down to the Philistines, to sharpen every man his share, and his coulter, and his axe, and his mattock;21 yet they had a file for the mattocks, and for the coulters, and for the forks, and for the axes, and to set the goads.22 So it came to pass in the day of battle, that there was neither sword nor spear found in the hand of any of the people that were with Saul and Jonathan: but with Saul and with Jonathan his son was there found.23 And the garrison of the Philistines went out unto the pass of Michmash.

Krig med filisterne

1 Saul var tretti år gammel da han ble konge, og han var konge over Israel i to år.t t
2 Saul valgte seg ut tre tusen mann av Israel. To tusen av dem var sammen med Saul ved Mikmas og i heiene ved Betel, og ett tusen var sammen med Jonatan ved Gibea i Benjamin. Resten av folket sendte han hjem, hver til sitt. t 3 Jonatan slo i hjel filisternes vaktposter i Gibea. Da filisterne fikk melding om det, sa de: «Hebreerne har gjort opprør.» Saul lot da hornet gjalle over hele landet. 4 Hele Israel fikk høre at Saul hadde slått i hjel filisternes vaktposter, og at filisterne hadde lagt israelittene for hat. Da ble folket kalt ut for å følge Saul til Gilgal. 5 Filisterne samlet seg til kamp mot Israel, med tre tusen vogner og seks tusen hestfolk, og fotfolk så mange som sanden på havets strand. De kom og slo leir ved Mikmas, rett imot Bet-Aven. t 6 Israelittene så at de var i fare fordi fiendehæren trengte på, og folk gjemte seg i huler, hellere og kløfter, i kjellere og brønner.

Saul var fremdeles i Gilgal, og hele folket fulgte ham, skjelvende av redsel. 8 Han ventet i sju dager, til den tiden Samuel hadde fastsatt. Men Samuel kom ikke til Gilgal, og folket tok til å spre seg og gå fra Saul. 9 Da sa han: «Kom hit med brennofferet og måltidsofferet!» Så bar han fram brennofferet. 10 Men da han hadde gjort det, kom Samuel. Saul gikk imot ham for å hilse ham velkommen. 11 Samuel sa: «Hva har du gjort?» Saul svarte: «Jeg så at folket tok til å spre seg og gå fra meg. Du kom ikke til fastsatt tid, og filisterne samlet seg ved Mikmas. 12 Da tenkte jeg: Nå kommer filisterne ned til Gilgal og går til angrep på meg uten at jeg har bedt om Herrens velvilje, og derfor våget jeg meg til å bære fram brennofferet.» 13 Men Samuel sa til Saul: «Du har båret deg uforstandig at. Du har ikke holdt det budet som Herren din Gud gav deg. For da ville Herren ha stadfestet ditt kongedømme over Israel for alle tider. 14 Men nå skal ditt kongedømme ikke stå ved lag. Herren har søkt seg ut en mann etter sitt hjerte og kalt ham til fyrste over sitt folk. For du har ikke holdt det Herren bød deg.» t

15 Så gjorde Samuel seg ferdig; han brøt opp fra Gilgal og drog sin vei til Gibea i Benjamin.
Da Saul mønstret folket som hadde samlet seg rundt ham, var det omkring seks hundre mann. t 16 Saul og Jonatan, sønnen hans, lå ved Geba i Benjamin med folket som hadde samlet seg rundt dem, og filisterne hadde slått leir ved Mikmas. 17 Fra filisterleiren drog det ut en flokk for å herje. Den var delt i tre lag. Ett lag tok veien mot Ofra i Sjual-bygden, t

18 ett drog i retning av Bet-Horon og ett mot den bygden som ligger ovenfor Hyenedalen, bortover mot ødemarken.
19 Den gang fantes det ingen smed i hele Israel, for filisterne ville ikke at hebreerne skulle lage seg sverd og spyd. t 20 Derfor måtte hver israelitt dra ned til filisterne når han skulle ha kvesset et plogjern eller et plogskjær, en øks eller en sigd. 21 Prisen var to tredjedels sekel for plogjern og plogskjær og en tredjedels sekel for høygafler og økser og for å få satt jernpigg på en stav.

22 Slik hadde det seg at den dagen slaget stod, hadde ingen av dem som fulgte Saul og Jonatan, sverd eller spyd. Bare Saul og hans sønn Jonatan hadde slike våpen.
23 Filisterne lot en forpost rykke fram til passet ved Mikmas.
