2 Chronicles 2

1 Now Solomon purposed to build a house for the name of Jehovah, and a house for his kingdom.2 And Solomon counted out threescore and ten thousand men to bear burdens, and fourscore thousand men that were hewers in the mountains, and three thousand and six hundred to oversee them.3 And Solomon sent to Huram the king of Tyre, saying, As thou didst deal with David my father, and didst send him cedars to build him a house to dwell therein, even so deal with me.4 Behold, I am about to build a house for the name of Jehovah my God, to dedicate it to him, and to burn before him incense of sweet spices, and for the continual showbread, and for the burnt-offerings morning and evening, on the sabbaths, and on the new moons, and on the set feasts of Jehovah our God. This is an ordinance for ever to Israel.5 And the house which I build is great; for great is our God above all gods.6 But who is able to build him a house, seeing heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain him? who am I then, that I should build him a house, save only to burn incense before him?7 Now therefore send me a man skilful to work in gold, and in silver, and in brass, and in iron, and in purple, and crimson, and blue, and that knoweth how to grave all manner of gravings, to be with the skilful men that are with me in Judah and in Jerusalem, whom David my father did provide.8 Send me also cedar-trees, fir-trees, and algum-trees, out of Lebanon; for I know that thy servants know how to cut timber in Lebanon: and, behold, my servants shall be with thy servants,9 even to prepare me timber in abundance; for the house which I am about to build shall be great and wonderful.10 And, behold, I will give to thy servants, the hewers that cut timber, twenty thousand measures of beaten wheat, and twenty thousand measures of barley, and twenty thousand baths of wine, and twenty thousand baths of oil.11 Then Huram the king of Tyre answered in writing, which he sent to Solomon, Because Jehovah loveth his people, he hath made thee king over them.12 Huram said moreover, Blessed be Jehovah, the God of Israel, that made heaven and earth, who hath given to David the king a wise son, endued with discretion and understanding, that should build a house for Jehovah, and a house for his kingdom.13 And now I have sent a skilful man, endued with understanding, of Huram my father’s,14 the son of a woman of the daughters of Dan; and his father was a man of Tyre, skilful to work in gold, and in silver, in brass, in iron, in stone, and in timber, in purple, in blue, and in fine linen, and in crimson, also to grave any manner of graving, and to devise any device; that there may be a place appointed unto him with thy skilful men, and with the skilful men of my lord David thy father.15 Now therefore the wheat and the barley, the oil and the wine, which my lord hath spoken of, let him send unto his servants:16 and we will cut wood out of Lebanon, as much as thou shalt need; and we will bring it to thee in floats by sea to Joppa; and thou shalt carry it up to Jerusalem.17 And Solomon numbered all the sojourners that were in the land of Israel, after the numbering wherewith David his father had numbered them; and they were found a hundred and fifty thousand and three thousand and six hundred.18 And he set threescore and ten thousand of them to bear burdens, and fourscore thousand that were hewers in the mountains, and three thousand and six hundred overseers to set the people at work.

Salomo forbereder byggingen av tempelet

1  t Salomo tenkte nå på å bygge et hus for Herrens navn og en kongebolig til seg selv. 2 Han skrev ut 70 000 mann til bærere, 80 000 mann til steinhoggere i fjellet og 3600 mann til å ha oppsyn med dem. 3 t Så sendte Salomo bud til Hiram, kongen i Tyros: «Gjør nå det samme for meg som du gjorde for min far David da du sendte ham sedertre, så han kunne bygge seg et hus til å bo i. 4 t Nå vil jeg bygge et hus for Herren min Guds navn og hellige det til ham. Der skal det brennes velluktende røkelse for hans ansikt, og det skal alltid ligge skuebrød framme. Brennoffer skal bæres fram morgen og kveld på sabbatsdagene, nymånedagene og høytidene for Herren vår Gud. I alle tider skal dette gjelde for Israel. 5 t Det huset jeg vil bygge, skal være stort, for vår Gud er større enn alle guder. 6 t Men hvem er i stand til å bygge et hus for ham når himmelen og himlenes himmel ikke kan romme ham? Og hvem er vel jeg? Kan jeg bygge et hus for ham, annet enn for å tenne offerild for hans ansikt? 7 Send meg nå en mann som er dyktig til å arbeide med gull og sølv, bronse og jern, med purpurrødt, karmosinrødt og purpurblått stoff, en som også er dyktig i gravering. Han skal arbeide sammen med de dyktige mennene som jeg har her i Juda og Jerusalem, og som min far David forberedte til dette. 8 Send meg også sedertre, sypresser og sandeltre fra Libanon! Jeg vet at mennene dine er dyktige til å felle trær i Libanon. Og mine folk skal arbeide sammen med dine. 9 De må skaffe mye tømmer til meg. For det huset jeg vil bygge, skal bli stort og flott.

10 tt Tømmerhoggerne, tjenerne dine som feller trærne, vil jeg gi tjue tusen kor hvete, tjue tusen kor bygg, tjue tusen bat vin og tjue tusen bat olje.»
11  t Hiram, kongen i Tyros, svarte i et brev som han sendte til Salomo: «Fordi Herren elsker sitt folk, har han satt deg til konge over det.» 12 Og Hiram fortsatte: «Velsignet er Herren, Israels Gud, han som skapte himmelen og jorden. Han har gitt kong David en vis sønn, som har slik innsikt og forstand at han kan bygge et hus for Herren og en kongebolig til seg selv. 13 t Nå sender jeg deg en klok og kyndig mann, min mester Hiram. 14 t Han er sønn av en kvinne blant Dans døtre, men hans far er fra Tyros. Han er dyktig til å arbeide med gull og sølv, bronse og jern, stein og tre, med purpurrødt og purpurblått, hvitt og karmosinrødt stoff. Han er også dyktig i all slags gravering, han kan tenke ut og lage alt han blir satt til. Han skal arbeide sammen med de kyndige mennene dine og de kyndige mennene som var hos min herre, David, din far. 15 Nå kan min herre sende hveten og bygget, oljen og vinen som han har talt om, til sine tjenere.

16 t Så skal vi hugge så mange trær i Libanon som du trenger, og føre dem i flåter sjøveien til Jaffa. Men du må selv få dem opp til Jerusalem.»
17  t Salomo lot nå alle innflytterne i Israel bli talt, slik hans far David hadde holdt folketelling før ham. Det var i alt 153 600 mann. 18 t Av dem gjorde han 70 000 til bærere, 80 000 til steinhoggere i fjellet og 3600 til oppsynsmenn som skulle sørge for at folk gjorde arbeidet sitt.
