1 And it came to pass after this, that the king of the children of Ammon died, and Hanun his son reigned in his stead.2 And David said, I will show kindness unto Hanun the son of Nahash, as his father showed kindness unto me. So David sent by his servants to comfort him concerning his father. And David’s servants came into the land of the children of Ammon.3 But the princes of the children of Ammon said unto Hanun their lord, Thinkest thou that David doth honor thy father, in that he hath sent comforters unto thee? hath not David sent his servants unto thee to search the city, and to spy it out, and to overthrow it?4 So Hanun took David’s servants, and shaved off the one half of their beards, and cut off their garments in the middle, even to their buttocks, and sent them away.5 When they told it unto David, he sent to meet them; for the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, Tarry at Jericho until your beards be grown, and then return.
6 And when the children of Ammon saw that they were become odious to David, the children of Ammon sent and hired the Syrians of Beth-rehob, and the Syrians of Zobah, twenty thousand footmen, and the king of Maacah with a thousand men, and the men of Tob twelve thousand men.7 And when David heard of it, he sent Joab, and all the host of the mighty men.8 And the children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array at the entrance of the gate: and the Syrians of Zobah and of Rehob, and the men of Tob and Maacah, were by themselves in the field.
9 Now when Joab saw that the battle was set against him before and behind, he chose of all the choice men of Israel, and put them in array against the Syrians:10 And the rest of the people he committed into the hand of Abishai his brother; and he put them in array against the children of Ammon.11 And he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me; but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee, then I will come and help thee.12 Be of good courage, and let us play the man for our people, and for the cities of our God: and Jehovah do that which seemeth him good.13 So Joab and the people that were with him drew nigh unto the battle against the Syrians: and they fled before him.14 And when the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled, they likewise fled before Abishai, and entered into the city. Then Joab returned from the children of Ammon, and came to Jerusalem.
15 And when the Syrians saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they gathered themselves together.16 And Hadarezer sent, and brought out the Syrians that were beyond the River: and they came to Helam, with Shobach the captain of the host of Hadarezer at their head.17 And it was told David; and he gathered all Israel together, and passed over the Jordan, and came to Helam. And the Syrians set themselves in array against David, and fought with him.18 And the Syrians fled before Israel; and David slew of the Syrians the men of seven hundred chariots, and forty thousand horsemen, and smote Shobach the captain of their host, so that he died there.19 And when all the kings that were servants to Hadarezer saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they made peace with Israel, and served them. So the Syrians feared to help the children of Ammon any more.

Krig med ammonittene og arameerne
1 t En tid senere døde ammonittenes konge, og hans sønn Hanun ble konge etter ham. 2 Da sa David: «Jeg vil vise troskap mot Hanun, sønn av Nahasj, slik hans far viste troskap mot meg.» Så sendte David noen av mennene sine for å trøste ham i sorgen over faren. Men da Davids menn kom til ammonittenes land, 3 t sa ammonittenes feltherrer til Hanun, sin herre: «Tror du det er for å hedre din far at David sender folk som skal trøste deg? Nei, David har nok heller sendt mennene sine til deg for å spionere, utforske og endevende byen.» 4 Da grep Hanun Davids menn. Han raket av dem halve skjegget, klippet klærne deres i to opp til baken og sendte dem fra seg.
5 Da David fikk melding om dette, sendte han folk i møte med mennene, for de var grovt vanæret. Kongen sa til dem: «Bli i Jeriko til skjegget er vokst ut igjen. Så kan dere komme tilbake.»
6 t t Da skjønte ammonittene at de hadde pådratt seg Davids hat. De sendte ut folk og leide tjue tusen fotfolk av arameerne i Bet-Rehob og i Soba, tusen mann fra kongen i Maaka og tolv tusen mann fra Tob. 7 Da David hørte om dette, sendte han Joab av sted med hærens elitetropper. 8 Ammonittene dro ut og stilte seg opp til kamp foran byporten. Arameerne fra Soba og Rehob og mennene fra Tob og Maaka sto for seg selv på åpen mark. 9 Da Joab så at fienden truet både forfra og bakfra, valgte han ut noen av de beste krigerne i Israel og stilte dem opp mot arameerne. 10 Resten av hæren overlot han til sin bror Abisjai og stilte dem opp mot ammonittene. 11 Så sa han: «Hvis arameerne blir for sterke for meg, må du komme og hjelpe meg. Og blir ammonittene for sterke for deg, skal jeg komme deg til hjelp. 12 t Vær sterk! La oss kjempe tappert for vårt folk og for vår Guds byer, så får Herren gjøre det som er best i hans øyne.» 13 Så gikk Joab og mennene hans til angrep på arameerne, og de flyktet for ham.
14 Da ammonittene så at arameerne tok flukten, flyktet de for Abisjai og kom seg inn i byen. Joab avbrøt felttoget mot ammonittene og dro tilbake til Jerusalem.
15 Da arameerne så at de var slått av israelittene, samlet de seg igjen. 16 t Hadadeser ga ordre til arameerne på den andre siden av Eufrat om å rykke ut, og de kom til Helam. Sjobak, hærføreren til Hadadeser, ledet dem. 17 Da David fikk melding om dette, samlet han alle israelittene, satte over Jordan og dro til Helam. Arameerne stilte seg opp til kamp mot David og gikk til angrep på ham.
18 Men arameerne måtte flykte for israelittene, og David drepte mannskapet på 700 av arameernes stridsvogner og 40 000 ryttere. Han slo ned hærføreren Sjobak, og han døde der.
19 Da alle vasallkongene som sto under Hadadeser, så at de var slått av israelittene, sluttet de fred med dem og ga seg inn under Israel. Siden våget ikke arameerne å hjelpe ammonittene mer.
