2 Samuel 23

1 Now these are the last words of David. David the son of Jesse saith, And the man who was raised on high saith, The anointed of the God of Jacob, And the sweet psalmist of Israel:

2 The Spirit of Jehovah spake by me, And his word was upon my tongue.

3 The God of Israel said, The Rock of Israel spake to me: One that ruleth over men righteously, That ruleth in the fear of God,

4  He shall be as the light of the morning, when the sun riseth, A morning without clouds, When the tender grass springeth out of the earth, Through clear shining after rain.

5 Verily my house is not so with God; Yet he hath made with me an everlasting covenant, Ordered in all things, and sure: For it is all my salvation, and all my desire, Although he maketh it not to grow.

6 But the ungodly shall be all of them as thorns to be thrust away, Because they cannot be taken with the hand;

7 But the man that toucheth them Must be armed with iron and the staff of a spear: And they shall be utterly burned with fire in their place.

8 These are the names of the mighty men whom David had: Josheb-basshebeth a Tahchemonite, chief of the captains; the same was Adino the Eznite, against eight hundred slain at one time.

9 And after him was Eleazar the son of Dodai the son of an Ahohite, one of the three mighty men with David, when they defied the Philistines that were there gathered together to battle, and the men of Israel were gone away.10 He arose, and smote the Philistines until his hand was weary, and his hand clave unto the sword; and Jehovah wrought a great victory that day; and the people returned after him only to take spoil.

11 And after him was Shammah the son of Agee a Hararite. And the Philistines were gathered together into a troop, where was a plot of ground full of lentils; and the people fled from the Philistines.12 But he stood in the midst of the plot, and defended it, and slew the Philistines; and Jehovah wrought a great victory.

13 And three of the thirty chief men went down, and came to David in the harvest time unto the cave of Adullam; and the troop of the Philistines was encamped in the valley of Rephaim.14 And David was then in the stronghold; and the garrison of the Philistines was then in Beth-lehem.15 And David longed, and said, Oh that one would give me water to drink of the well of Beth-lehem, which is by the gate!16 And the three mighty men brake through the host of the Philistines, and drew water out of the well of Beth-lehem, that was by the gate, and took it, and brought it to David: but he would not drink thereof, but poured it out unto Jehovah.17 And he said, Be it far from me, O Jehovah, that I should do this: shall I drink the blood of the men that went in jeopardy of their lives? therefore he would not drink it. These things did the three mighty men.

18 And Abishai, the brother of Joab, the son of Zeruiah, was chief of the three. And he lifted up his spear against three hundred and slew them, and had a name among the three.19 Was he not most honorable of the three? therefore he was made their captain: howbeit he attained not unto the first three.

20 And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the son of a valiant man of Kabzeel, who had done mighty deeds, he slew the two sons of Ariel of Moab: he went down also and slew a lion in the midst of a pit in time of snow.21 And he slew an Egyptian, a goodly man: and the Egyptian had a spear in his hand; but he went down to him with a staff, and plucked the spear out of the Egyptian’s hand, and slew him with his own spear.22 These things did Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and had a name among the three mighty men.23 He was more honorable than the thirty, but he attained not to the first three. And David set him over his guard.

24 Asahel the brother of Joab was one of the thirty; Elhanan the son of Dodo of Beth-lehem,25 Shammah the Harodite, Elika the Harodite,26 Helez the Paltite, Ira the son of Ikkesh the Tekoite,27 Abiezer the Anathothite, Mebunnai the Hushathite,28 Zalmon the Ahohite, Maharai the Netophathite,29 Heleb the son of Baanah the Netophathite, Ittai the son of Ribai of Gibeah of the children of Benjamin,30 Benaiah a Pirathonite, Hiddai of the brooks of Gaash.31 Abialbon the Arbathite, Azmaveth the Barhumite,32 Eliahba the Shaalbonite, the sons of Jashen, Jonathan,33 Shammah the Hararite, Ahiam the son of Sharar the Ararite,34 Eliphelet the son of Ahasbai, the son of the Maacathite, Eliam the son of Ahithophel the Gilonite,35 Hezro the Carmelite, Paarai the Arbite,36 Igal the son of Nathan of Zobah, Bani the Gadite,37 Zelek the Ammonite, Naharai the Beerothite, armorbearers to Joab the son of Zeruiah,38 Ira the Ithrite, Gareb the Ithrite,39 Uriah the Hittite: thirty and seven in all.

Davids siste ord

1  t Dette er Davids siste ord.
Så sier David, Isais sønn,
så sier mannen som Gud har reist opp,
han som er salvet av Jakobs Gud,
og som har diktet Israels sanger:

2  t Herrens ånd taler gjennom meg,
hans ord er på min tunge.

3  t Israels Gud har talt,
til meg har Israels klippe sagt:
«Den som styrer mennesker med rettferd,
den som rår med gudsfrykt,

4 er lik morgenlyset når solen går opp,
en morgen med skyfri himmel;
gjennom solskinn og regn
lar det gresset gro fram fra jorden.»

5  t Slik har mitt hus det med Gud.
For han har sluttet en evig pakt med meg,
vel ordnet og trofast holdt.
Ja, alt som tjener til min frelse,
alt jeg ønsker, lar han spire fram.

6  t Men de onde er alle
lik torner som kastes bort,
ingen tar dem i hendene.

7 Ingen kommer dem nær
uten med jern og spydskaft.
Der de står, blir de brent opp med ild.

Davids krigere

8  t t Dette er navnene på Davids krigshelter:
Josjeb-Basjebet av Hakmon-slekten, høvding for de tre. Det var han som svingte spydet over åtte hundre falne på én gang. 9 Etter ham kom Elasar, sønn av Dodo fra Ahoah. Han var en av de tre heltene som var med David ved Pas-Dammim da filisterne hadde samlet seg til kamp der. Israelittene trakk seg tilbake,

10 men han holdt stand og hogg ned filisterne til hånden hans ble så stiv at den hang fast i sverdet. Den dagen lot Herren dem vinne en stor seier. Og da hæren snudde og fulgte Elasar, var det bare for å plyndre de falne.
11  t Etter ham kom Sjamma, sønn av Age fra Harar. En gang hadde filisterne samlet seg ved Lehi. Det var en tett linseåker der, og da israelittene flyktet for filisterne,

12 stilte han seg midt i åkeren og vernet den. Han hogg løs på filisterne, og Herren lot ham vinne en stor seier.
13  t En gang da det led mot kornhøsten, dro tre av de tretti høvdingene ned til David, som var i hulen ved Adullam. Filisterhæren lå da i leir i Refa'im-dalen. 14 t David holdt den gangen til i fjellborgen, og filisternes forpost lå ved Betlehem. 15 Da ble David svært tørst og sa: «Hvem vil hente vann til meg fra brønnen ved byporten i Betlehem?» 16 De tre heltene tok seg inn i filisterleiren. De øste opp vann fra brønnen ved byporten i Betlehem og kom til David med det. Men han ville ikke drikke det; han øste det ut for Herren

17 og sa: «Herren fri meg fra å gjøre noe slikt! Skulle jeg drikke blodet av disse mennene som satte livet på spill?» Og han ville ikke drikke det. – Dette gjorde de tre heltene.
18  t Abisjai, bror til Joab og sønn av Seruja, var høvding over de tretti. En gang svingte han spydet over tre hundre falne, og han fikk et stort navn blant de tretti.

19 Han var høyt aktet blant de tretti og ble deres leder, men han kom ikke opp mot de tre.
20  t Benaja, sønn av Jojada, fra Kabseel, var en modig mann og gjorde mange heltegjerninger. Han slo i hjel de to sønnene til Ariel fra Moab. En dag da det hadde snødd, steg han ned i en brønn og drepte en løve. 21 Han felte også en kjempestor egypter. Egypteren hadde et spyd i hånden, men Benaja gikk imot ham med en stav, rev spydet ut av hånden på egypteren og drepte ham med hans eget spyd. 22 t Dette gjorde Benaja, sønn av Jojada, og han fikk et stort navn blant de tretti krigsheltene.

23 Han var høyt aktet blant de tretti, men kom ikke opp mot de tre. David satte ham over livvakten sin.
24 Blant de tretti var også Asael, bror til Joab; Elhanan, sønn av Dodo fra Betlehem; 25 Sjamma fra Harod; Elika fra Harod; 26 Heles fra Pelet; Ira, sønn av Ikkesj fra Tekoa; 27 Abieser fra Anatot; Mebunnai fra Husja; 28 Salmon fra Ahoah; Mahrai fra Netofa; 29 Heleb, sønn av Baana fra Netofa; Ittai, sønn av Ribai fra Gibea i Benjamin; 30 Benaja fra Piraton; Hiddai fra Gaasj-dalene; 31 Abi-Albon fra Bet-Araba; Asmavet fra Bahurim; 32 Eljahba fra Sjaalbon; Jasjen-sønnene; Jonatan; 33 Sjamma fra Harar; Ahiam, sønn av Sjarar fra Harar; 34 Elifelet, sønn av Ahasbai fra Maaka; Eliam, sønn av Ahitofel fra Gilo; 35 Hesro fra Karmel; Paarai fra Arab; 36 Jigal, sønn av Natan fra Soba; Bani fra Gad; 37 Selek fra Ammon; Nahrai fra Beerot, våpenbæreren til Joab, sønn av Seruja; 38 Ira fra Jattir; Gareb fra Jattir; 39 t hetitten Uria. Det var i alt trettisju mann.
