2 Samuel 24
1 And again the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Israel, and he moved David against them, saying, Go, number Israel and Judah.2 And the king said to Joab the captain of the host, who was with him, Go now to and fro through all the tribes of Israel, from Dan even to Beer-sheba, and number ye the people, that I may know the sum of the people.3 And Joab said unto the king, Now Jehovah thy God add unto the people, how many soever they may be, a hundredfold; and may the eyes of my lord the king see it: but why doth my lord the king delight in this thing?4 Notwithstanding, the king’s word prevailed against Joab, and against the captains of the host. And Joab and the captains of the host went out from the presence of the king, to number the people of Israel.5 And they passed over the Jordan, and encamped in Aroer, on the right side of the city that is in the middle of the valley of Gad, and unto Jazer:6 then they came to Gilead, and to the land of Tahtim-hodshi; and they came to Dan-jaan, and round about to Sidon,7 and came to the stronghold of Tyre, and to all the cities of the Hivites, and of the Canaanites; and they went out to the south of Judah, at Beer-sheba.8 So when they had gone to and fro through all the land, they came to Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days.9 And Joab gave up the sum of the numbering of the people unto the king: and there were in Israel eight hundred thousand valiant men that drew the sword; and the men of Judah were five hundred thousand men.
10 And David’s heart smote him after that he had numbered the people. And David said unto Jehovah, I have sinned greatly in that which I have done: but now, O Jehovah, put away, I beseech thee, the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very foolishly.11 And when David rose up in the morning, the word of Jehovah came unto the prophet Gad, David’s seer, saying,12 Go and speak unto David, Thus saith Jehovah, I offer thee three things: choose thee one of them, that I may do it unto thee.13 So Gad came to David, and told him, and said unto him, Shall seven years of famine come unto thee in thy land? or wilt thou flee three months before thy foes while they pursue thee? or shall there be three days’ pestilence in thy land? now advise thee, and consider what answer I shall return to him that sent me.14 And David said unto Gad, I am in a great strait: let us fall now into the hand of Jehovah; for his mercies are great; and let me not fall into the hand of man.15 So Jehovah sent a pestilence upon Israel from the morning even to the time appointed; and there died of the people from Dan even to Beer-sheba seventy thousand men.16 And when the angel stretched out his hand toward Jerusalem to destroy it, Jehovah repented him of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed the people, It is enough; now stay thy hand. And the angel of Jehovah was by the threshing-floor of Araunah the Jebusite.17 And David spake unto Jehovah when he saw the angel that smote the people, and said, Lo, I have sinned, and I have done perversely; but these sheep, what have they done? let thy hand, I pray thee, be against me, and against my father’s house.
18 And Gad came that day to David, and said unto him, Go up, rear an altar unto Jehovah in the threshing-floor of Araunah the Jebusite.19 And David went up according to the saying of Gad, as Jehovah commanded.20 And Araunah looked forth, and saw the king and his servants coming on toward him: and Araunah went out, and bowed himself before the king with his face to the ground.21 And Araunah said, Wherefore is my lord the king come to his servant? And David said, To buy the threshing-floor of thee, to build an altar unto Jehovah, that the plague may be stayed from the people.22 And Araunah said unto David, Let my lord the king take and offer up what seemeth good unto him: behold, the oxen for the burnt-offering, and the threshing instruments and the yokes of the oxen for the wood:23 all this, O king, doth Araunah give unto the king. And Araunah said unto the king, Jehovah thy God accept thee.24 And the king said unto Araunah, Nay; but I will verily buy it of thee at a price. Neither will I offer burnt-offerings unto Jehovah my God which cost me nothing. So David bought the threshing-floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.25 And David built there an altar unto Jehovah, and offered burnt-offerings and peace-offerings. So Jehovah was entreated for the land, and the plague was stayed from Israel.

Folketellingen og pesten
1 t Enda en gang ble Herren brennende harm på Israel. Han satte David opp mot dem og sa til ham: «Gå og hold folketelling i Israel og Juda!» 2 Da sa kongen til hærføreren Joab, som var hos ham: «Dra rundt til alle Israels stammer, fra Dan til Beer-Sjeba. Du skal mønstre folket, så jeg kan få vite hvor mange de teller.» 3 t Joab svarte kongen: «Måtte Herren din Gud la kongen se med egne øyne at folket blir hundre ganger så tallrikt som nå. Men hvorfor vil du gjøre dette, herre konge?»
4 Men kongens ord lå tungt på Joab og hærførerne.
Da dro Joab og hærførerne bort fra kongen for å mønstre Israels folk. 5 tt De gikk over Jordan og begynte med Aroer og byen som ligger midt i dalen Gad, og de fortsatte til Jaser. 6 Deretter kom de til Gilead og området ved Tahtim-Hodsji og så til Dan-Jaan. Derfra vendte de seg i retning Sidon. 7 Så kom de til festningsbyen Tyros og alle hevittbyene og kanaaneerbyene. Derfra dro de til det sørlige Juda, til Beer-Sjeba. 8 De fór rundt i hele landet, og etter ni måneder og tjue dager kom de tilbake til Jerusalem.
9 Joab la fram for kongen det tallet folketellingen hadde gitt. I Israel var det åtte hundre tusen krigere, våpenføre menn, og i Juda fem hundre tusen.
10 t Men etter at David hadde talt folket, kjente han at det stakk ham i hjertet, og han sa til Herren: «Jeg har gjort en stor synd. Men ta nå bort din tjeners skyld, Herre, for jeg har vært uklok.»
11 t Da David sto opp om morgenen, var Herrens ord kommet til profeten Gad, Davids seer: 12 «Gå og si til David: Så sier Herren: Tre ting legger jeg fram for deg. Velg en av dem, og jeg vil la den ramme deg.» 13 t Da gikk Gad til David og meldte det til ham. Han sa: «Skal det være hungersnød i landet ditt i sju år? Skal du være på flukt fra fiendene dine i tre måneder mens de forfølger deg? Skal det komme pest over landet ditt i tre dager? Tenk nøye etter, og bestem deg for hva jeg skal svare ham som har sendt meg.»
14 David sa til Gad: «Jeg er i stor nød. La oss helst falle i Herrens hånd, for hans barmhjertighet er stor. Men i menneskehånd vil jeg ikke falle.»
15 t Da lot Herren pesten komme over Israel. Den varte fra morgenen og til den tiden han hadde fastsatt. Det døde sytti tusen mann av folket, fra Dan til Beer-Sjeba. 16 tt Men da engelen rakte hånden ut mot Jerusalem for å ødelegge byen, angret Herren det onde. Han sa til engelen som herjet blant folket: «Det er nok! Trekk nå hånden tilbake!» Herrens engel sto da på treskeplassen til jebusitten Aravna. {{Da David så opp, fikk han øye på Herrens engel som sto mellom himmel og jord med løftet sverd i hånden. Det var rettet mot Jerusalem. De eldste kastet seg da til jorden, kledd i sekkestrie.}}
17 t Da David fikk se engelen som slo ned folket, sa han til Herren: «Det er jeg som har syndet; jeg har handlet ille. Men disse, som jeg er gjeter for, hva ondt har de gjort? La heller din hånd ramme meg og min fars hus.»
18 t Samme dag kom Gad til David og sa: «Gå opp og reis et alter for Herren på treskeplassen til jebusitten Aravna!» 19 David gikk da dit opp, slik som Herren hadde pålagt ham gjennom Gad. 20 t Da Aravna så nedover, fikk han øye på kongen og tjenerne hans, som kom mot ham. Aravna gikk ut og kastet seg ned for kongen med ansiktet mot jorden. 21 t Aravna spurte: «Hvorfor kommer du hit til din tjener, herre konge?» David svarte: «Jeg vil kjøpe treskeplassen av deg og bygge et alter for Herren der, så pesten kan holde opp å herje blant folket.» 22 t Da sa Aravna til David: «Bare ta den, min herre konge, og ofre hva du vil. Se, oksene er til brennoffer og treskesledene og åket på oksene til ved. 23 Alt dette, konge, vil Aravna gi til kongen», og han la til: «Måtte Herren din Gud vise velvilje mot deg!» 24 t Men kongen sa til Aravna: «Nei, jeg vil kjøpe det av deg til full pris. Jeg vil ikke ofre for Herren min Gud brennoffer som jeg ikke har betalt.» Så kjøpte David treskeplassen og oksene for femti sjekel sølv. 25 t Der bygde David et alter for Herren og bar fram brennoffer og fredsoffer. Da hørte Herren bønnene for landet, og pesten holdt opp å herje i Israel.
