Daniel 1

1 In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah came Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon unto Jerusalem, and besieged it.2 And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with part of the vessels of the house of God; and he carried them into the land of Shinar to the house of his god: and he brought the vessels into the treasure-house of his god.3 And the king spake unto Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring in certain of the children of Israel, even of the seed royal and of the nobles;4 youths in whom was no blemish, but well-favored, and skilful in all wisdom, and endued with knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability to stand in the king’s palace; and that he should teach them the learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans.5 And the king appointed for them a daily portion of the king’s dainties, and of the wine which he drank, and that they should be nourished three years; that at the end thereof they should stand before the king.6 Now among these were, of the children of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah.7 And the prince of the eunuchs gave names unto them: unto Daniel he gave the name of Belteshazzar; and to Hananiah, of Shadrach; and to Mishael, of Meshach; and to Azariah, of Abed-nego.8 But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the king’s dainties, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.9 Now God made Daniel to find kindness and compassion in the sight of the prince of the eunuchs.10 And the prince of the eunuchs said unto Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who hath appointed your food and your drink: for why should he see your faces worse looking than the youths that are of your own age? so would ye endanger my head with the king.11 Then said Daniel to the steward whom the prince of the eunuchs had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah:12 Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.13 Then let our countenances be looked upon before thee, and the countenance of the youths that eat of the king’s dainties; and as thou seest, deal with thy servants.14 So he hearkened unto them in this matter, and proved them ten days.15 And at the end of ten days their countenances appeared fairer, and they were fatter in flesh, than all the youths that did eat of the king’s dainties.16 So the steward took away their dainties, and the wine that they should drink, and gave them pulse.17 Now as for these four youths, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.18 And at the end of the days which the king had appointed for bringing them in, the prince of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar.19 And the king communed with them; and among them all was found none like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: therefore stood they before the king.20 And in every matter of wisdom and understanding, concerning which the king inquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters that were in all his realm.21 And Daniel continued even unto the first year of king Cyrus.

Daniel hos kongen av Babel

1  t t I det tredje året Jojakim var konge i Juda, kom Nebukadnesar, kongen i Babel, til Jerusalem og beleiret byen.

2 tt Herren overga Juda-kongen Jojakim i hans hender, sammen med noe av utstyret fra Guds hus. Nebukadnesar tok det med til Sinear-landet, til sin guds hus. Han satte tempelutstyret i skattkammeret til sin gud.
3  t Kongen sa til Aspenas, hoffsjefen, at han skulle hente noen israelitter som var av kongeætt eller av fornem familie, 4 unge gutter som var uten feil på kroppen og vakre å se til, kyndige i all slags visdom, kunnskapsrike og lærenemme, skikket til å gjøre tjeneste i kongens slott. Han skulle lære dem opp i kaldeernes skrifter og språk. 5 Kongen bestemte at de hver dag skulle få spise maten og drikke vinen fra kongens bord. I tre år skulle de få opplæring, og deretter skulle de tre inn i kongens tjeneste. 6 t Blant dem var jødene Daniel, Hananja, Misjael og Asarja.

7 t Hoffsjefen ga dem nye navn. Daniel kalte han Beltsasar, Hananja kalte han Sjadrak, Misjael kalte han Mesjak, og Asarja kalte han Abed-Nego.
8 Daniel bestemte seg for at han ikke ville gjøre seg uren med maten og vinen fra kongens bord. Han ba hoffsjefen om å få slippe å gjøre seg uren. 9 t Gud lot hoffsjefen få godhet og velvilje for Daniel. 10 Men hoffsjefen sa til Daniel: «Jeg frykter at min herre kongen, som har bestemt hva dere skal spise og drikke, skal synes at dere ikke ser så friske ut som de andre guttene på deres alder, og da har dere satt livet mitt i fare hos kongen.» 11 Daniel sa da til oppsynsmannen som hoffsjefen hadde satt over Daniel, Hananja, Misjael og Asarja: 12 «Prøv tjenerne dine i ti dager! Gi oss grønnsaker å spise og vann å drikke! 13 Så kan du sammenligne vårt utseende med de unge guttene som spiser av maten fra kongens bord, og behandle tjenerne dine ut fra det du da får se.» 14 Han hørte på dem i denne saken og prøvet dem i ti dager. 15 Da de ti dagene var gått, viste det seg at de så bedre og sunnere ut enn de guttene som hadde spist av maten fra kongens bord.

16 Så lot oppsynsmannen dem slippe denne maten og vinen og ga dem grønnsaker.

17  t Gud ga de fire guttene kunnskap og kyndighet i alle skrifter og all slags visdom. Og Daniel skjønte seg på alle slags syner og drømmer.
18 Da tiden kongen hadde fastsatt, var til ende og de skulle føres fram for ham, førte hoffsjefen dem fram for Nebukadnesar. 19 Kongen snakket med dem, og det fantes ingen som kunne måle seg med Daniel, Hananja, Misjael og Asarja. Og de trådte inn i kongens tjeneste.

20 Hver gang kongen spurte dem til råds i saker som krevde visdom og forstand, fant han dem ti ganger visere enn alle drømmetydere og åndemanere i hele riket.
21  t t Daniel ble værende der til kong Kyros' første regjeringsår.
