Exodus 19

1 In the third month after the children of Israel were gone forth out of the land of Egypt, the same day came they into the wilderness of Sinai.2 And when they were departed from Rephidim, and were come to the wilderness of Sinai, they encamped in the wilderness; and there Israel encamped before the mount.3 And Moses went up unto God, and Jehovah called unto him out of the mountain, saying, Thus shalt thou say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel:4 Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bare you on eagles’ wings, and brought you unto myself.5 Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be mine own possession from among all peoples: for all the earth is mine:6 and ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and a holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.

7 And Moses came and called for the elders of the people, and set before them all these words which Jehovah commanded him.8 And all the people answered together, and said, All that Jehovah hath spoken we will do. And Moses reported the words of the people unto Jehovah.9 And Jehovah said unto Moses, Lo, I come unto thee in a thick cloud, that the people may hear when I speak with thee, and may also believe thee for ever. And Moses told the words of the people unto Jehovah.10 And Jehovah said unto Moses, Go unto the people, and sanctify them to-day and to-morrow, and let them wash their garments,11 and be ready against the third day; for the third day Jehovah will come down in the sight of all the people upon mount Sinai.12 And thou shalt set bounds unto the people round about, saying, Take heed to yourselves, that ye go not up into the mount, or touch the border of it: whosoever toucheth the mount shall be surely put to death:13 no hand shall touch him, but he shall surely be stoned, or shot through; whether it be beast or man, he shall not live: when the trumpet soundeth long, they shall come up to the mount.14 And Moses went down from the mount unto the people, and sanctified the people; and they washed their garments.15 And he said unto the people, Be ready against the third day: come not near a woman.

16 And it came to pass on the third day, when it was morning, that there were thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud upon the mount, and the voice of a trumpet exceeding loud; and all the people that were in the camp trembled.17 And Moses brought forth the people out of the camp to meet God; and they stood at the nether part of the mount.18 And mount Sinai, the whole of it, smoked, because Jehovah descended upon it in fire; and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly.19 And when the voice of the trumpet waxed louder and louder, Moses spake, and God answered him by a voice.20 And Jehovah came down upon mount Sinai, to the top of the mount: and Jehovah called Moses to the top of the mount; and Moses went up.21 And Jehovah said unto Moses, Go down, charge the people, lest they break through unto Jehovah to gaze, and many of them perish.22 And let the priests also, that come near to Jehovah, sanctify themselves, lest Jehovah break forth upon them.23 And Moses said unto Jehovah, The people cannot come up to mount Sinai: for thou didst charge us, saying, Set bounds about the mount, and sanctify it.24 And Jehovah said unto him, Go, get thee down; and thou shalt come up, thou, and Aaron with thee: but let not the priests and the people break through to come up unto Jehovah, lest he break forth upon them.25 So Moses went down unto the people, and told them.

Ved fjellet Sinai

1 På tremånedersdagen etter at Israels barn var dratt ut av landet Egypt, kom de til Sinai ørken. 2 De brøt opp fra Refidim og kom til Sinai ørken og slo leir i ørkenen. Israel leiret seg der midt imot fjellet. s3 Så steg Moses opp til Gud. Og Herren ropte til ham fra fjellet og sa: Så skal du si til Jakobs hus og kunngjøre for Israels barn: s4 Dere har selv sett hva jeg har gjort med egypterne, og hvordan jeg bar dere på ørnevinger og brakte dere til meg. s5 Dersom dere nå virkelig vil høre min røst og holde min pakt, da skal dere være min eiendom fremfor alle folk - for hele jorden er min. s6 Dere skal være et kongerike av prester for meg og et hellig folk. Dette er de ordene du skal tale til Israels barn. s7 Da Moses kom tilbake, kalte han til seg folkets eldste og bar fram for dem alle disse ordene som Herren hadde pålagt ham. 8 Da svarte hele folket, alle sammen: Alt det Herren har sagt, vil vi gjøre. Og Moses bar folkets ord tilbake til Herren. s9 Da sa Herren til Moses: Se, jeg vil komme til deg i en tett sky, så folket kan høre når jeg taler med deg, og alltid tro på deg. - Og Moses bar folkets ord fram for Herren. 10 Og Herren sa til Moses: Gå til folket og hellige dem i dag og i morgen. La dem vaske sine klær. s11 På den tredje dagen skal de holde seg rede, for på den tredje dagen skal Herren stige ned på Sinai berg for hele folkets øyne.

12 Du skal avmerke en grense for folket rundt omkring, og si: Ta dere i vare for å stige opp på fjellet eller røre ved dets fot! Hver den som rører ved fjellet, skal visselig lide døden. 13 Ingen hånd skal røre ved ham, han skal steines eller gjennombores med piler. Enten det er dyr eller mennesker, skal de ikke leve. - Når jubelhornet lyder med lange toner, da skal de stige opp på fjellet. s14 Så gikk Moses ned fra fjellet til folket. Han helliget folket, og de vasket sine klær. 15 Og han sa til folket: Hold dere rede den tredje dagen, kom ikke nær noen kvinne. 16 Så skjedde det på den tredje dagen da morgenen brøt fram, da tok det til å tordne og lyne. En tung sky la seg over fjellet, og det hørtes en meget kraftig lyd fra horn. Da skalv alt folket i leiren. s17 Men Moses førte folket ut av leiren til møte med Gud, og de stilte seg nedenfor fjellet. s

18 Hele Sinai berg sto i røk, fordi Herren var steget ned på det i ild. Røken steg opp som av en smelteovn, og hele fjellet skalv. 19 Hornets tone økte i styrke og ble stadig sterkere. Moses talte, og Gud svarte ham med høy røst. 20 Og Herren steg ned på Sinai berg, på toppen av fjellet. Så kalte Herren Moses opp på toppen av fjellet, og Moses steg opp. 21 Og Herren sa til Moses: Stig ned og advar folket, så de ikke trenger seg fram til Herren for å se ham, for da kommer mange av dem til å falle.

22 Også prestene, de som trer Herren nær, skal hellige seg, så ikke Herren skal bryte inn blant dem. 23 Da sa Moses til Herren: Folket kan ikke stige opp på Sinai berg. Du har selv advart oss og sagt at vi skulle avmerke en grense om fjellet og hellige det. s

24 Men Herren sa til ham: Gå ned, og kom så opp igjen, du og Aron! Men prestene og folket må ikke trenge seg fram og stige opp til Herren, for at han ikke skal bryte inn blant dem. 25 Da steg Moses ned til folket og sa det til dem.
