Genesis 17

1 And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, Jehovah appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am God Almighty; walk before me, and be thou perfect.2 And I will make my covenant between me and thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly.3 And Abram fell on his face: and God talked with him, saying,4 As for me, behold, my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be the father of a multitude of nations.5 Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for the father of a multitude of nations have I made thee.6 And I will make thee exceeding fruitful, and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee.7 And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee and to thy seed after thee.8 And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land of thy sojournings, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.

9 And God said unto Abraham, And as for thee, thou shalt keep my covenant, thou, and thy seed after thee throughout their generations.10 This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee: every male among you shall be circumcised.11 And ye shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be a token of a covenant betwixt me and you.12 And he that is eight days old shall be circumcised among you, every male throughout your generations, he that is born in the house, or bought with money of any foreigner that is not of thy seed.13 He that is born in thy house, and he that is bought with thy money, must needs be circumcised: and my covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant.14 And the uncircumcised male who is not circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin, that soul shall be cut off from his people; he hath broken my covenant.

15 And God said unto Abraham, As for Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall her name be.16 And I will bless her, and moreover I will give thee a son of her: yea, I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of peoples shall be of her.17 Then Abraham fell upon his face, and laughed, and said in his heart, Shall a child be born unto him that is a hundred years old? and shall Sarah, that is ninety years old, bear?18 And Abraham said unto God, Oh that Ishmael might live before thee!19 And God said, Nay, but Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant for his seed after him.20 And as for Ishmael, I have heard thee: behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly; twelve princes shall he beget, and I will make him a great nation.21 But my covenant will I establish with Isaac, whom Sarah shall bear unto thee at this set time in the next year.

22 And he left off talking with him, and God went up from Abraham.23 And Abraham took Ishmael his son, and all that were born in his house, and all that were bought with his money, every male among the men of Abraham’s house, and circumcised the flesh of their foreskin in the selfsame day, as God had said unto him.24 And Abraham was ninety years old and nine, when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.25 And Ishmael his son was thirteen years old, when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.26 In the selfsame day was Abraham circumcised, and Ishmael his son.27 And all the men of his house, those born in the house, and those bought with money of a foreigner, were circumcised with him.

Abram blir Abraham

1 Da Abram var nittini år gammel, åpenbarte Herren seg for ham og sa til ham: Jeg er Gud Den Allmektige, vandre for mitt åsyn og vær ustraffelig. 2 Jeg vil opprette min pakt mellom meg og deg, og jeg vil gjøre din ætt overmåte tallrik. s3 Da falt Abram på sitt ansikt, og Gud talte med ham og sa:

4 Se, jeg slutter min pakt med deg, og du skal bli far til en mengde folk. 5 Ditt navn skal ikke mer være Abram, men ditt navn skal være Abraham, for jeg gjør deg til far for en mengde folk*. stt6 Jeg vil gjøre deg overmåte fruktbar, jeg gjør deg til mange folk, og konger skal utgå fra deg.

7 Jeg vil opprette min pakt mellom meg og deg og din ætt etter deg, fra slekt til slekt - en evig pakt. Jeg skal være Gud for deg og for din ætt etter deg. 8 Jeg vil gi til deg og din ætt etter deg det landet hvor du bor som fremmed, hele Kana’ans land, til en evig eiendom. Og jeg vil være deres Gud. s

Paktstegnet

9 Så sa Gud til Abraham: Du skal holde min pakt, du og din ætt etter deg gjennom sine slektledd. 10 Dette er min pakt som dere skal holde, pakten mellom meg og dere og dine etterkommere: Alt mannkjønn hos dere skal omskjæres. s11 Dere skal omskjæres på deres kjøds forhud, og det skal være tegnet på pakten mellom meg og dere. 12 Åtte dager gammel skal alle som er av mannkjønn hos dere, omskjæres, slekt etter slekt, både den som er født i ditt hus, og den som er kjøpt for penger av fremmede som ikke er av din ætt. 13 Omskjæres skal både den som er født i ditt hus og den som er kjøpt for dine penger. Slik skal min pakt være på deres kjød - en evig pakt. 14 En uomskåren av mannkjønn, en som ikke er blitt omskåret på sin forhud, han skal utryddes av sitt folk, han har brutt min pakt.

Sarai skal hete Sara, og hun skal få en sønn

15 Så sa Gud til Abraham: Sarai, din kone, skal du ikke lenger kalle Sarai, men Sara skal være hennes navn. 16 Jeg vil velsigne henne, og gi deg en sønn også med henne. Ja, jeg vil velsigne henne og hun skal bli til folkeslag, konger over mange folk skal fremgå av henne. 17 Da falt Abraham på sitt ansikt og lo, og han sa i sitt hjerte: Skulle en som er hundre år gammel, få barn? Og Sara, som er nitti år gammel, skulle hun føde? s18 Og Abraham sa til Gud: Måtte bare Ismael få leve for ditt åsyn! 19 Men Gud sa: Sannelig, Sara, din kone, skal føde deg en sønn, og du skal kalle ham Isak*. Jeg vil opprette min pakt med ham, en evig pakt for hans ætt etter ham. s20 Og Ismael - også om ham har jeg hørt deg: Se, jeg vil velsigne ham, jeg vil gjøre ham fruktbar og gi ham en overmåte tallrik ætt. Han skal bli far til tolv høvdinger, og jeg vil gjøre ham til et stort folk. s21 Men min pakt vil jeg opprette med Isak, som Sara skal føde deg på denne tiden neste år. s22 Så sluttet han å tale med ham, og Gud for opp fra Abraham.

23 Samme dag tok Abraham Ismael, sin sønn, og alle som var født i hans hus, og alle som var kjøpt for hans penger, alt mannkjønn blant folkene i Abrahams hus, og han omskar deres forhud, slik Gud hadde sagt til ham. 24 Abraham var nittini år gammel da hans forhud ble omskåret. 25 Ismael, sønnen hans, var tretten år da hans forhud ble omskåret. 26 På én og samme dag ble de omskåret, Abraham og hans sønn Ismael, 27 og alle menn i hans hus, de som var født i hans hus og de som var kjøpt for penger av fremmede, ble omskåret med ham.
