Judges 11
1 Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty man of valor, and he was the son of a harlot: and Gilead begat Jephthah.2 And Gilead’s wife bare him sons; and when his wife’s sons grew up, they drove out Jephthah, and said unto him, Thou shalt not inherit in our father’s house; for thou art the son of another woman.3 Then Jephthah fled from his brethren, and dwelt in the land of Tob: and there were gathered vain fellows to Jephthah, and they went out with him.
4 And it came to pass after a while, that the children of Ammon made war against Israel.5 And it was so, that, when the children of Ammon made war against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to fetch Jephthah out of the land of Tob;6 and they said unto Jephthah, Come and be our chief, that we may fight with the children of Ammon.7 And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, Did not ye hate me, and drive me out of my father’s house? and why are ye come unto me now when ye are in distress?8 And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, Therefore are we turned again to thee now, that thou mayest go with us, and fight with the children of Ammon; and thou shalt be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.9 And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, If ye bring me home again to fight with the children of Ammon, and Jehovah deliver them before me, shall I be your head?10 And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, Jehovah shall be witness between us; surely according to thy word so will we do.11 Then Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and chief over them: and Jephthah spake all his words before Jehovah in Mizpah.
12 And Jephthah sent messengers unto the king of the children of Ammon, saying, What hast thou to do with me, that thou art come unto me to fight against my land?13 And the king of the children of Ammon answered unto the messengers of Jephthah, Because Israel took away my land, when he came up out of Egypt, from the Arnon even unto the Jabbok, and unto the Jordan: now therefore restore those lands again peaceably.14 And Jephthah sent messengers again unto the king of the children of Ammon;15 and he said unto him, Thus saith Jephthah: Israel took not away the land of Moab, nor the land of the children of Ammon,16 but when they came up from Egypt, and Israel went through the wilderness unto the Red Sea, and came to Kadesh;17 then Israel sent messengers unto the king of Edom, saying, Let me, I pray thee, pass through thy land; but the king of Edom hearkened not. And in like manner he sent unto the king of Moab; but he would not: and Israel abode in Kadesh.18 Then they went through the wilderness, and went around the land of Edom, and the land of Moab, and came by the east side of the land of Moab, and they encamped on the other side of the Arnon; but they came not within the border of Moab, for the Arnon was the border of Moab.19 And Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorites, the king of Heshbon; and Israel said unto him, Let us pass, we pray thee, through thy land unto my place.20 But Sihon trusted not Israel to pass through his border; but Sihon gathered all his people together, and encamped in Jahaz, and fought against Israel.21 And Jehovah, the God of Israel, delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they smote them: so Israel possessed all the land of the Amorites, the inhabitants of that country.22 And they possessed all the border of the Amorites, from the Arnon even unto the Jabbok, and from the wilderness even unto the Jordan.23 So now Jehovah, the God of Israel, hath dispossessed the Amorites from before his people Israel, and shouldest thou possess them?24 Wilt not thou possess that which Chemosh thy god giveth thee to possess? So whomsoever Jehovah our God hath dispossessed from before us, them will we possess.25 And now art thou anything better than Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? did he ever strive against Israel, or did he ever fight against them?26 While Israel dwelt in Heshbon and its towns, and in Aroer and its towns, and in all the cities that are along by the side of the Arnon, three hundred years; wherefore did ye not recover them within that time?27 I therefore have not sinned against thee, but thou doest me wrong to war against me: Jehovah, the Judge, be judge this day between the children of Israel and the children of Ammon.28 Howbeit the king of the children of Ammon hearkened not unto the words of Jephthah which he sent him.
29 Then the Spirit of Jehovah came upon Jephthah, and he passed over Gilead and Manasseh, and passed over Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead he passed over unto the children of Ammon.30 And Jephthah vowed a vow unto Jehovah, and said, If thou wilt indeed deliver the children of Ammon into my hand,31 then it shall be, that whatsoever cometh forth from the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, it shall be Jehovah’s, and I will offer it up for a burnt-offering.32 So Jephthah passed over unto the children of Ammon to fight against them; and Jehovah delivered them into his hand.33 And he smote them from Aroer until thou come to Minnith, even twenty cities, and unto Abelcheramim, with a very great slaughter. So the children of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel.
34 And Jephthah came to Mizpah unto his house; and, behold, his daughter came out to meet him with timbrels and with dances: and she was his only child; besides her he had neither son nor daughter.35 And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his clothes, and said, Alas, my daughter! thou hast brought me very low, and thou art one of them that trouble me; for I have opened my mouth unto Jehovah, and I cannot go back.36 And she said unto him, My father, thou hast opened thy mouth unto Jehovah; do unto me according to that which hath proceeded out of thy mouth, forasmuch as Jehovah hath taken vengeance for thee on thine enemies, even on the children of Ammon.37 And she said unto her father, Let this thing be done for me: let me alone two months, that I may depart and go down upon the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my companions.38 And he said, Go. And he sent her away for two months: and she departed, she and her companions, and bewailed her virginity upon the mountains.39 And it came to pass at the end of two months, that she returned unto her father, who did with her according to his vow which he had vowed: and she knew not man. And it was a custom in Israel,40 that the daughters of Israel went yearly to celebrate the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days in a year.

1 Jefta fra Gilead var en djerv krigsmann. Men han var sønn av en horkvinne. Hans far var Gilead. s2 Også med sin kone hadde Gilead sønner, og da konens sønner ble voksne, jaget de bort Jefta og sa til ham: Du skal ingen arvedel ha i vår fars hus, for du er sønn av en fremmed kvinne. 3 Da flyktet Jefta for brødrene sine og bosatte seg i landet Tob*. Der samlet det seg en flokk løse menn om Jefta, og de dro ut med ham på hans streiftog. s
4 En tid etter begynte Ammons barn krig mot Israel. s5 Da de gikk til angrep på Israel, dro de eldste i Gilead av sted for å hente Jefta fra landet Tob. 6 De sa til Jefta: Kom og bli føreren vår, så vil vi ta kampen opp mot Ammons barn. 7 Men Jefta sa til de eldste i Gilead: Var det ikke dere som hatet meg og drev meg bort fra min fars hus? Hvorfor kommer dere da til meg nå når dere er i trengsel? 8 De eldste i Gilead svarte: Det er jo derfor vi kommer til deg igjen! Du må gå med oss og kjempe mot Ammons barn, så skal du være høvding over oss, over alle som bor i Gilead. s9 Da sa Jefta til de eldste i Gilead: Dersom dere nå får meg med dere tilbake for å kjempe mot Ammons barn, og Herren gir dem i min hånd, så er det altså jeg som skal være høvding over dere! 10 Og de eldste i Gilead sa til Jefta: Herren skal være vitne mellom oss dersom vi ikke gjør som du har sagt! s11 Så gikk Jefta med de eldste i Gilead. Folket gjorde ham til sin høvding og fører. Og Jefta gjentok i Mispa alle sine ord for Herrens åsyn.
12 Så sendte Jefta bud til ammonittenes konge og sa: Er det noe mellom deg og meg, siden du kommer hit og fører krig mot mitt land? 13 Da sa ammonittenes konge til Jeftas sendebud: Da Israel dro opp fra Egypt, tok de mitt land like fra Arnon til Jabbok og til Jordan. Gi det nå tilbake med det gode! s14 Jefta sendte da igjen bud til ammonittenes konge, 15 og sa til ham: Så sier Jefta: Israel har ikke tatt Moabs land eller ammonittenes land. s16 På sin ferd opp fra Egypt vandret Israel i ørkenen til Rødehavet og kom til Kadesj. 17 Da sendte Israel bud til Edoms konge og sa: La meg få dra gjennom ditt land! Men Edoms konge hørte ikke på dem. Også til Moabs konge sendte de bud, men han ville heller ikke. Så ble Israel i Kadesj. s18 Siden vandret de i ørkenen og dro utenom Edoms land og Moabs land og kom fram øst for Moabs land og slo leir på den andre siden av Arnon. Men de kom ikke inn i Moabs land, for Arnon er Moabs grense. s19 Så sendte Israel bud til Sihon, amorittenes konge, kongen i Hesjbon. Og de sa til ham: La oss få dra gjennom ditt land, så vi kan komme dit vi skal! s20 Men Sihon hadde ikke så stor tillit til Israel at han torde la dem dra gjennom landet sitt. Han samlet alt folket sitt, og de slo leir i Jahsa, og så gikk de til angrep på Israel. 21 Men Herren, Israels Gud, ga Sihon og alt folket hans i Israels hånd. De slo dem, og Israel inntok hele det landet som tilhørte amorittene, det folket som bodde der. 22 Hele amorittenes land inntok de, like fra Arnon til Jabbok og fra ørkenen til Jordan. 23 Slik har Herren, Israels Gud, drevet amorittene bort for sitt folk Israel. Og nå vil du ta deres land til din eiendom? 24 Er det ikke så, at det som din gud Kamosj lar deg få, det tar du i eie, og alt det Herren vår Gud rydder for oss, det tar vi i eie? s25 Er vel du bedre enn Balak, Sippors sønn, Moabs konge? Trettet vel han med Israel eller førte krig mot dem? s26 Nå har Israel bodd tre hundre år i Hesjbon og byene som tilhører det, og i Aroer med tilhørende byer og i alle de byer som ligger ved Arnons bredder. Hvorfor har dere da ikke tatt dem tilbake i hele denne tiden? 27 Jeg har ikke gjort deg noe ondt. Men du gjør nå urett mot meg ved å angripe meg. Herren, han som er dommer, han skal dømme i dag mellom Israels barn og Ammons barn. s28 Men ammonittenes konge hørte ikke på det som Jeftas sendebud bar fram til ham.
Jeftas løfte
29 Da kom Herrens Ånd over Jefta. Han dro fram gjennom Gilead og Manasse og videre til Mispa i Gilead. Og fra Mispa i Gilead dro han fram mot Ammons barn. s30 Og Jefta gjorde et løfte til Herren og sa: Dersom du gir Ammons barn i min hånd, 31 da skal den første som går ut av døren i mitt hus og kommer imot meg når jeg kommer uskadd tilbake fra Ammons barn, høre Herren til. Jeg skal ofre ham som brennoffer*. s
32 Så dro Jefta fram mot Ammons barn og kjempet mot dem, og Herren ga dem i hans hånd. 33 Han slo dem og tok fra dem landet fra Aroer til bort mot Minnit, tjue byer, og helt til Abel-Keramim. Det ble et stort mannefall, og Ammons barn ble ydmyket under Israels barn. s
Jeftas datter
34 Da Jefta kom hjem til sitt hus i Mispa, kom hans datter ut imot ham med tamburiner og dans. Hun var hans eneste barn, han hadde ingen sønn eller datter uten henne. s35 Med det samme Jefta fikk se henne, flerret han klærne sine og sa: Å min datter! For en sorg du volder meg, og for en ulykke du fører over meg! Jeg har gjort et løfte til Herren, og jeg kan ikke ta det tilbake. s36 Da sa hun til ham: Far, har du gjort et løfte til Herren, så gjør med meg som du har lovt, siden Herren lot deg få hevn over fiendene dine, Ammons barn. 37 Så sa hun til sin far: Bare én ting vil jeg be deg om: La meg være fri i to måneder, så jeg kan gå ned på fjellene og gråte over min jomfrustand sammen med mine venninner. 38 Og han sa: Gjør så! Så lot han henne være fri to måneder. Hun gikk av sted med venninnene sine og gråt over sin jomfrustand på fjellene. 39 Da to måneder var omme, kom hun tilbake til sin far. Han gjorde med henne etter det løfte han hadde gitt, og hun visste ikke av mann. Så ble det en skikk i Israel: 40 År for år går Israels døtre av sted for å minnes Jeftas, gileadittens datter fire dager om året.
