Luke 16

1 And he said also unto the disciples, There was a certain rich man, who had a steward; and the same was accused unto him that he was wasting his goods.2 And he called him, and said unto him, What is this that I hear of thee? render the account of thy stewardship; for thou canst be no longer steward.3 And the steward said within himself, What shall I do, seeing that my lord taketh away the stewardship from me? I have not strength to dig; to beg I am ashamed.4 I am resolved what to do, that, when I am put out of the stewardship, they may receive me into their houses.5 And calling to him each one of his lord’s debtors, he said to the first, How much owest thou unto my lord?6 And he said, A hundred measures of oil. And he said unto him, Take thy bond, and sit down quickly and write fifty.7 Then said he to another, And how much owest thou? And he said, A hundred measures of wheat. He saith unto him, Take thy bond, and write fourscore.8 And his lord commended the unrighteous steward because he had done wisely: for the sons of this world are for their own generation wiser than the sons of the light.9 And I say unto you, Make to yourselves friends by means of the mammon of unrighteousness; that, when it shall fail, they may receive you into the eternal tabernacles.10 He that is faithful in a very little is faithful also in much: and he that is unrighteous in a very little is unrighteous also in much.11 If therefore ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches?12 And if ye have not been faithful in that which is another’s, who will give you that which is your own?13 No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.14 And the Pharisees, who were lovers of money, heard all these things; and they scoffed at him.15 And he said unto them, Ye are they that justify yourselves in the sight of men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is exalted among men is an abomination in the sight of God.16 The law and the prophets were until John: from that time the gospel of the kingdom of God is preached, and every man entereth violently into it.17 But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away, than for one tittle of the law to fall.18 Every one that putteth away his wife, and marrieth another, committeth adultery: and he that marrieth one that is put away from a husband committeth adultery.19 Now there was a certain rich man, and he was clothed in purple and fine linen, faring sumptuously every day:20 and a certain beggar named Lazarus was laid at his gate, full of sores,21 and desiring to be fed with the crumbs that fell from the rich man’s table; yea, even the dogs come and licked his sores.22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and that he was carried away by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: and the rich man also died, and was buried.23 And in Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.24 And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am in anguish in this flame.25 But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and Lazarus in like manner evil things: but now here he is comforted and thou art in anguish.26 And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, that they that would pass from hence to you may not be able, and that none may cross over from thence to us.27 And he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father’s house;28 for I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.29 But Abraham saith, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.30 And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one go to them from the dead, they will repent.31 And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, if one rise from the dead.

Den uærlige forvalteren

1 Men han sa også til disiplene sine: Det var en rik mann som hadde en forvalter. Denne ble angitt for ham, det ble sagt at han sløste bort eiendommen hans. 2 Mannen kalte ham da til seg og sa: Hva er det jeg hører om deg? Gjør regnskap for hvordan du har forvaltet eiendommen, for du kan ikke være forvalter lenger! 3 Da sa forvalteren til seg selv: Hva skal jeg gjøre, nå når min herre tar forvaltningen fra meg? Grave orker jeg ikke, og å tigge skammer jeg meg for. 4 Nå vet jeg hva jeg skal gjøre, for at de skal ta imot meg i sine hus når jeg er blitt avsatt. 5 Han kalte så til seg hver enkelt av sin herres skyldnere. Til den første sa han: Hvor mye skylder du min herre? 6 Han sa: Hundre fat olje. Da sa han til ham: Her har du gjeldsbrevet ditt. Sett deg nå ned, skynd deg og skriv femti! 7 Deretter sa han til en annen: Og du, hvor mye skylder du? Han sa: Hundre tønner hvete. Han sier til ham: Ta gjeldsbrevet ditt og skriv åtti! 8 Herren roste den urettferdige forvalteren fordi han hadde skikket seg klokt. For denne verdens barn er klokere mot sin egen slekt enn lysets barn. s9 Og jeg sier dere: Gjør dere venner ved den urettferdige mammon, for at de, når den svikter, kan ta imot dere i de evige boliger! s10 Den som er tro i smått, er også tro i stort. Og den som er urettferdig i smått, er også urettferdig i stort. s11 Dersom dere ikke er tro i den urettferdige mammon, hvem vil da betro dere de sanne skatter? s12 Og har dere ikke vært tro i det som hører andre til, hvem vil da gi dere noe til egen eiendom?

13 Ingen tjener kan tjene to herrer. For han vil enten hate den ene og elske den andre, eller han vil holde seg til den ene og forakte den andre. Dere kan ikke tjene Gud og mammon. s14 Fariseerne hørte alt dette, og pengekjære som de var, spottet de ham. s15 Og han sa til dem: Dere er slike som rettferdiggjør seg selv i menneskenes øyne, men Gud kjenner hjertene deres. For det som mennesker akter høyt, er en styggedom i Guds øyne. ss16 Loven og profetene hadde sin tid inntil Johannes. Fra da av forkynnes evangeliet om Guds rike, og enhver trenger seg inn i det med makt. s17 Men før skal himmel og jord forgå, før en eneste tøddel av loven skal falle bort. s18 Hver den som skiller seg fra sin hustru og gifter seg med en annen, bryter ekteskapet. Og den som gifter seg med en kvinne som er skilt fra sin mann, bryter ekteskapet. s

Den rike mannen og Lasarus

19 Det var en rik mann som kledde seg i purpur og fineste lin, og som levde hver dag i herlighet og glede. s20 Men det var en fattig mann ved navn Lasarus, som var lagt ved porten hans. Han var full av verkende sår. 21 Hans ønske var å få mette seg med smulene som falt fra den rikes bord. Men endog hundene kom og slikket sårene hans. 22 Så skjedde det at den fattige døde, og englene bar ham bort til Abrahams fang. Men også den rike døde og ble begravet. s23 Og da han slo sine øyne opp i dødsriket, der han var i pine, - da ser han Abraham langt borte og Lasarus i hans fang. s24 Da ropte han og sa: Far Abraham! Forbarm deg over meg og send Lasarus, så han kan dyppe fingertuppen sin i vann og svale min tunge! For jeg lider svær pine i denne ilden. s25 Men Abraham sa: Sønn, husk at du fikk dine goder i din levetid, likesom Lasarus fikk det vonde. Men nå trøstes han her, mens du pines. s26 Dessuten er det festet et stort svelg mellom oss og dere, for at de som måtte ønske å gå herfra over til dere, ikke skal være i stand til det. Heller ikke kan noen komme derfra og over til oss. 27 Da sa han: Så ber jeg deg, far, at du må sende ham til min fars hus - 28 for jeg har fem brødre - for at han kan vitne for dem, så ikke også de skal komme til dette pinens sted. s29 Men Abraham sier til ham: De har Moses og profetene. La dem høre dem! s30 Men han sa: Nei, far Abraham! Men kommer det noen til dem fra de døde, da vil de omvende seg. 31 Men han sa til ham: Hører de ikke Moses og profetene, da vil de heller ikke la seg overbevise om noen står opp fra de døde. s
