Matthew 1

1 The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.

2 Abraham begat Isaac; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat Judah and his brethren;3 and Judah begat Perez and Zerah of Tamar; and Perez begat Hezron; and Hezron begat Ram;4 and Ram begat Amminadab; and Amminadab begat Nahshon; and Nahshon begat Salmon;5 and Salmon begat Boaz of Rahab; and Boaz begat Obed of Ruth; and Obed begat Jesse;6 and Jesse begat David the king. And David begat Solomon of her that had been the wife of Uriah;7 and Solomon begat Rehoboam; and Rehoboam begat Abijah; and Abijah begat Asa;8 and Asa begat Jehoshaphat; and Jehoshaphat begat Joram; and Joram begat Uzziah;9 and Uzziah begat Jotham; and Jotham begat Ahaz; and Ahaz begat Hezekiah;10 and Hezekiah begat Manasseh; and Manasseh begat Amon; and Amon begat Josiah;11 and Josiah begat Jechoniah and his brethren, at the time of the carrying away to Babylon.

12 And after the carrying away to Babylon, Jechoniah begat Shealtiel; and Shealtiel begat Zerubbabel;13 and Zerubbabel begat Abiud; and Abiud begat Eliakim; and Eliakim begat Azor;14 and Azor begat Sadoc; and Sadoc begat Achim; and Achim begat Eliud;15 and Eliud begat Eleazar; and Eleazar begat Matthan; and Matthan begat Jacob;16 and Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.

17 So all the generations from Abraham unto David are fourteen generations; and from David unto the carrying away to Babylon fourteen generations; and from the carrying away to Babylon unto the Christ fourteen generations.

18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found with child of the Holy Spirit.19 And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man, and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privily.20 But when he thought on these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.21 And she shall bring forth a son; and thou shalt call his name JESUS; for it is he that shall save his people from their sins.22 Now all this is come to pass, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying,

23 Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, And they shall call his name Immanuel; which is, being interpreted, God with us.24 And Joseph arose from his sleep, and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took unto him his wife;25 and knew her not till she had brought forth a son: and he called his name JESUS.

1 Ættetavle for Jesus Messias, Davids sønn, Abrahams sønn: s2 Abraham fikk sønnen Isak. Isak fikk Jakob. Jakob fikk Juda og hans brødre. s3 Juda fikk sønnene Peres og Serah med Tamar. Peres fikk Hesron. Hesron fikk Ram. s4 Ram fikk sønnen Aminadab. Aminadab fikk Nahson. Nahson fikk Salmon. 5 Salmon fikk sønnen Boas med Rahab. Boas fikk Obed med Rut. Obed fikk Isai. 6 Isai ble far til kong David. David fikk Salomo med Urias kone. s7 Salomo fikk sønnen Rehabeam. Rehabeam fikk Abia. Abia fikk Asa. s8 Asa fikk sønnen Josjafat. Josjafat fikk Joram. Joram fikk Ussia. s9 Ussia fikk sønnen Jotam. Jotam fikk Akas. Akas fikk Hiskia. s10 Hiskia fikk sønnen Manasse. Manasse fikk Amon. Amon fikk Josjia. s11 Josjia fikk Jekonja og hans brødre på den tiden da folket ble bortført til Babylon. s12 Etter bortførelsen til Babylon fikk Jekonja sønnen Sjealtiel. Sjealtiel fikk Serubabel. s13 Serubabel fikk sønnen Abiud. Abiud fikk Eljakim. Eljakim fikk Asor. 14 Asor fikk sønnen Sadok. Sadok fikk Akim. Akim fikk Eliud. 15 Eliud fikk sønnen Eleasar. Eleasar fikk Mattan. Mattan fikk Jakob. 16 Jakob ble far til Josef, Marias mann. Av henne ble Jesus født, han som kalles Messias. s17 Slik er det i alt fjorten slektledd fra Abraham til David, fjorten ledd fra David til bortførelsen til Babylon, og fjorten ledd fra bortførelsen til Babylon inntil Messias.

Jesus blir født

18 Med Jesu Kristi fødsel gikk det slik til: Hans mor, Maria, var forlovet med Josef. Men før de var kommet sammen, viste det seg at hun var med barn, ved Den Hellige Ånd. s19 Josef, hennes mann, var rettferdig, og ville ikke føre skam over henne. Han ville skille seg fra henne i stillhet. 20 Mens han nå tenkte på dette, se, da viste en Herrens engel seg for ham i en drøm og sa: Josef, Davids sønn! Frykt ikke for å ta Maria, din hustru, hjem til deg. For det som er unnfanget i henne, er av Den Hellige Ånd. s21 Hun skal føde en sønn, og du skal gi ham navnet Jesus, for han skal frelse sitt folk fra deres synder. s22 Alt dette skjedde for at det skulle bli oppfylt som Herren hadde sagt ved profeten: 23 Se, jomfruen skal bli med barn og føde en sønn, og de skal gi ham navnet Immanuel - det betyr: Med oss er Gud. s24 Da Josef var våknet av søvnen, gjorde han som Herrens engel hadde pålagt ham, og han førte sin hustru hjem til seg. 25 Men han levde ikke med henne før hun hadde født sin sønn. Og han ga ham navnet Jesus. s
