Matthew 2

1 Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, Wise-men from the east came to Jerusalem, saying,2 Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we saw his star in the east, and are come to worship him.3 And when Herod the king heard it, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.4 And gathering together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ should be born.5 And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written through the prophet,

6 And thou Bethlehem, land of Judah, Art in no wise least among the princes of Judah: For out of thee shall come forth a governor, Who shall be shepherd of my people Israel.

7 Then Herod privily called the Wise-men, and learned of them exactly what time the star appeared.8 And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search out exactly concerning the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word, that I also may come and worship him.9 And they, having heard the king, went their way; and lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was.10 And when they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.11 And they came into the house and saw the young child with Mary his mother; and they fell down and worshipped him; and opening their treasures they offered unto him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh.12 And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way.

13 Now when they were departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I tell thee: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him.14 And he arose and took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt;15 and was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt did I call my son.

16 Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the Wise-men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the male children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the borders thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had exactly learned of the Wise-men.17 Then was fulfilled that which was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet, saying,

18 A voice was heard in Ramah, Weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children; And she would not be comforted, because they are not.

19 But when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeareth in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, saying,20 Arise and take the young child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they are dead that sought the young child’s life.21 And he arose and took the young child and his mother, and came into the land of Israel.22 But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judaea in the room of his father Herod, he was afraid to go thither; and being warned of God in a dream, he withdrew into the parts of Galilee,23 and came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth; that it might be fulfilled which was spoken through the prophets, that he should be called a Nazarene.

Matteus 2

Vismennene fra Østerland

1 Da Jesus var født i Betlehem i Judea, i kong Herodes’* dager, se, da kom noen vismenn fra Østerland til Jerusalem. s2 De sa: Hvor er den jødenes konge som er født nå? For vi så hans stjerne i Østen, og er kommet for å tilbe ham. ss3 Da kong Herodes hørte det, ble han forferdet, og hele Jerusalem med ham. 4 Han samlet alle yppersteprestene og folkets skriftlærde og spurte dem ut om hvor Messias skulle bli født. 5 De sa til ham: I Betlehem i Judea, for så er skrevet ved profeten: s6 Du Betlehem i Juda land er slett ikke den ringeste blant fyrstene i Juda. For fra deg skal gå ut en høvding som skal være hyrde for mitt folk Israel. 7 Da kalte Herodes hemmelig vismennene til seg, og spurte dem nøye ut om tiden da stjernen hadde vist seg. s8 Så sendte han dem til Betlehem og sa: Gå av sted og spør nøye ut om barnet. Og når dere har funnet det, da meld fra til meg, for at også jeg kan komme og tilbe det. 9 Da de hadde hørt hva kongen sa, dro de av sted. Og se, stjernen som de hadde sett i Østen, gikk foran dem inntil den kom og ble stående over stedet der barnet var. 10 Og da de så stjernen, ble de over all måte glade.

11 De gikk inn i huset, og fikk se barnet med Maria, dets mor, og de falt ned og tilba det. Så åpnet de skrinene sine og bar fram gaver til barnet: gull, røkelse og myrra. s12 Men da de i en drøm ble varslet at de ikke skulle vende tilbake til Herodes, dro de en annen vei hjem til landet sitt.

Flukten til Egypt

13 Da de var dratt bort, se, da viser en Herrens engel seg for Josef i en drøm og sier: Stå opp, ta barnet og dets mor med deg og flykt til Egypt! Bli der til jeg sier fra til deg. For Herodes kommer til å lete etter barnet for å drepe det. s14 Han sto da opp, tok barnet og dets mor om natten, og dro av sted til Egypt. 15 Der ble han til Herodes var død, for at det skulle bli oppfylt som Herren hadde talt ved profeten: Fra Egypt kalte jeg min sønn. s

Barnemordet i Betlehem

16 Da Herodes så at han var blitt narret av vismennene, ble han meget vred. Han sendte folk og lot drepe alle guttebarn i Betlehem og alle bygdene i omegnen, de som var to år eller yngre, i samsvar med det han hadde fått vite av vismennene om tiden. s17 Da ble det oppfylt som er talt ved profeten Jeremia, som sier: 18 En røst ble hørt i Rama, gråt og stor klage. Rakel gråt over sine barn og ville ikke la seg trøste, for de er ikke mer. s

Fra Egypt tilbake til Israel

19 Men da Herodes var død, se, da viste en Herrens engel seg i en drøm for Josef i Egypt, 20 og sa: Stå opp, ta med deg barnet og dets mor og dra til Israels land. For de som ville barnet til livs, er døde. s21 Og han sto opp, tok med seg barnet og dets mor, og kom til Israels land. 22 Men da han fikk høre at Arkelaus var blitt konge i Judea etter sin far Herodes, var han redd for å dra dit. Varslet av Gud i en drøm, dro han til områdene i Galilea. 23 Da han kom dit, bosatte han seg i en by som heter Nasaret*, for at det skulle bli oppfylt som var talt ved profetene, at han skulle kalles en nasareer. ssss
