Matthew 3
1 And in those days cometh John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea, saying,2 Repent ye; for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.3 For this is he that was spoken of through Isaiah the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make ye ready the way of the Lord, Make his paths straight.
4 Now John himself had his raiment of camel’s hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his food was locusts and wild honey.5 Then went out unto him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about the Jordan;6 and they were baptized of him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said unto them, Ye offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?8 Bring forth therefore fruit worthy of repentance:9 and think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.10 And even now the axe lieth at the root of the trees: every tree therefore that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.11 I indeed baptize you in water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you in the Holy Spirit and in fire:12 whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing-floor; and he will gather his wheat into the garner, but the chaff he will burn up with unquenchable fire.
13 Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to the Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him.14 But John would have hindered him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?15 But Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffereth him.16 And Jesus when he was baptized, went up straightway from the water: and lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming upon him;17 and lo, a voice out of the heavens, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

Døperen Johannes’ virksomhet
1 I de dager sto døperen Johannes fram og forkynte i Judeas ørken. s2 Han sa: Omvend dere, for himlenes rike er kommet nær! s3 Det er ham det er talt om av profeten Jesaja, som sier: Det er en røst av en som roper i ørkenen: Rydd Herrens vei, gjør hans stier rette! s4 Denne Johannes var kledd i en kappe av kamelhår og hadde et lærbelte om livet, og maten hans var gresshopper og vill honning. s5 Da dro folk fra Jerusalem og hele Judea og hele landet ved Jordan ut til ham s6 og ble døpt av ham i elven Jordan, idet de bekjente syndene sine.
7 Men da han fikk se mange fariseere og saddukeere komme til hans dåp, sa han til dem: Ormeyngel! Hvem lærte dere å flykte fra den kommende vrede? s8 Så bær da frukt som er omvendelsen verdig. 9 Og tro ikke at dere kan si ved dere selv: Vi har Abraham til far. For jeg sier dere: Gud kan reise opp barn for Abraham av disse steinene. s10 Øksen ligger allerede ved roten av trærne. Hvert tre som ikke bærer god frukt, blir hogd ned og kastet på ilden. s11 Jeg døper dere med vann til omvendelse. Men han som kommer etter meg, er sterkere enn jeg - jeg er ikke engang verdig til å bære skoene hans! Han skal døpe dere med Den Hellige Ånd og ild. ss12 Han har sin kasteskovl i hånden og skal rense sin treskeplass. Hveten vil han samle i låven, men agnene skal han brenne opp med ild som ikke kan slokkes. s
Jesus blir døpt
13 Da dro Jesus fra Galilea til Jordan og kom til Johannes for å bli døpt av ham. s14 Men Johannes nektet ham det, og sa: Jeg trenger å bli døpt av deg, og du kommer til meg! 15 Men Jesus svarte ham og sa: La det nå skje! For slik er det riktig av oss å fullføre all rettferdighet. Da lot han det skje. s16 Da Jesus var blitt døpt, steg han straks opp av vannet. Og se, himmelen åpnet seg for ham, og han så Guds Ånd stige ned som en due og komme over ham. s17 Og se, det lød en røst fra himmelen: Dette er min Sønn, den elskede! I ham har jeg velbehag. s
