Numbers 16

1 Now Korah, the son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, with Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On, the son of Peleth, sons of Reuben, took men:2 and they rose up before Moses, with certain of the children of Israel, two hundred and fifty princes of the congregation, called to the assembly, men of renown;3 and they assembled themselves together against Moses and against Aaron, and said unto them, Ye take too much upon you, seeing all the congregation are holy, every one of them, and Jehovah is among them: wherefore then lift ye up yourselves above the assembly of Jehovah?

4 And when Moses heard it, he fell upon his face:5 and he spake unto Korah and unto all his company, saying, In the morning Jehovah will show who are his, and who is holy, and will cause him to come near unto him: even him whom he shall choose will he cause to come near unto him.6 This do: take you censers, Korah, and all his company;7 and put fire in them, and put incense upon them before Jehovah to-morrow: and it shall be that the man whom Jehovah doth choose, he shall be holy: ye take too much upon you, ye sons of Levi.8 And Moses said unto Korah, Hear now, ye sons of Levi:9 seemeth it but a small thing unto you, that the God of Israel hath separated you from the congregation of Israel, to bring you near to himself, to do the service of the tabernacle of Jehovah, and to stand before the congregation to minister unto them;10 and that he hath brought thee near, and all thy brethren the sons of Levi with thee? and seek ye the priesthood also?11 Therefore thou and all thy company are gathered together against Jehovah: and Aaron, what is he that ye murmur against him?

12 And Moses sent to call Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab; and they said, We will not come up:13 is it a small thing that thou hast brought us up out of a land flowing with milk and honey, to kill us in the wilderness, but thou must needs make thyself also a prince over us?14 Moreover thou hast not brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey, nor given us inheritance of fields and vineyards: wilt thou put out the eyes of these men? we will not come up.

15 And Moses was very wroth, and said unto Jehovah, Respect not thou their offering: I have not taken one ass from them, neither have I hurt one of them.16 And Moses said unto Korah, Be thou and all thy company before Jehovah, thou, and they, and Aaron, to-morrow:17 and take ye every man his censer, and put incense upon them, and bring ye before Jehovah every man his censer, two hundred and fifty censers; thou also, and Aaron, each his censer.18 And they took every man his censer, and put fire in them, and laid incense thereon, and stood at the door of the tent of meeting with Moses and Aaron.19 And Korah assembled all the congregation against them unto the door of the tent of meeting: and the glory of Jehovah appeared unto all the congregation.

20 And Jehovah spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying,21 Separate yourselves from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment.22 And they fell upon their faces, and said, O God, the God of the spirits of all flesh, shall one man sin, and wilt thou be wroth with all the congregation?23 And Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying,24 Speak unto the congregation, saying, Get you up from about the tabernacle of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram.

25 And Moses rose up and went unto Dathan and Abiram; and the elders of Israel followed him.26 And he spake unto the congregation, saying, Depart, I pray you, from the tents of these wicked men, and touch nothing of theirs, lest ye be consumed in all their sins.27 So they gat them up from the tabernacle of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram, on every side: and Dathan and Abiram came out, and stood at the door of their tents, and their wives, and their sons, and their little ones.28 And Moses said, Hereby ye shall know that Jehovah hath sent me to do all these works; for I have not done them of mine own mind.29 If these men die the common death of all men, or if they be visited after the visitation of all men; then Jehovah hath not sent me.30 But if Jehovah make a new thing, and the ground open its mouth, and swallow them up, with all that appertain unto them, and they go down alive into Sheol; then ye shall understand that these men have despised Jehovah.

31 And it came to pass, as he made an end of speaking all these words, that the ground clave asunder that was under them;32 and the earth opened its mouth, and swallowed them up, and their households, and all the men that appertained unto Korah, and all their goods.33 So they, and all that appertained to them, went down alive into Sheol: and the earth closed upon them, and they perished from among the assembly.34 And all Israel that were round about them fled at the cry of them; for they said, Lest the earth swallow us up.35 And fire came forth from Jehovah, and devoured the two hundred and fifty men that offered the incense.

36 And Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying,37 Speak unto Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest, that he take up the censers out of the burning, and scatter thou the fire yonder; for they are holy,38 even the censers of these sinners against their own lives; and let them be made beaten plates for a covering of the altar: for they offered them before Jehovah; therefore they are holy; and they shall be a sign unto the children of Israel.39 And Eleazar the priest took the brazen censers, which they that were burnt had offered; and they beat them out for a covering of the altar,40 to be a memorial unto the children of Israel, to the end that no stranger, that is not of the seed of Aaron, come near to burn incense before Jehovah; that he be not as Korah, and as his company: as Jehovah spake unto him by Moses.

41 But on the morrow all the congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron, saying, Ye have killed the people of Jehovah.42 And it came to pass, when the congregation was assembled against Moses and against Aaron, that they looked toward the tent of meeting: and, behold, the cloud covered it, and the glory of Jehovah appeared.43 And Moses and Aaron came to the front of the tent of meeting.44 And Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying,45 Get you up from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment. And they fell upon their faces.46 And Moses said unto Aaron, Take they censer, and put fire therein from off the altar, and lay incense thereon, and carry it quickly unto the congregation, and make atonement for them: for there is wrath gone out from Jehovah; the plague is begun.47 And Aaron took as Moses spake, and ran into the midst of the assembly; and, behold, the plague was begun among the people: and he put on the incense, and made atonement for the people.48 And he stood between the dead and the living; and the plague was stayed.49 Now they that died by the plague were fourteen thousand and seven hundred, besides them that died about the matter of Korah.50 And Aaron returned unto Moses unto the door of the tent of meeting: and the plague was stayed.

Korahs opprør

1 Korah, en sønn av Jishar, sønn av Kahat, Levis sønn, sammen med Datan og Abiram, sønner av Eliab, og On, en sønn av Pelet, av Rubens ætt, tok en flokk med seg. 2 De sto fram for Moses, og sammen med dem to hundre og femti menn av Israels barn, høvdinger i menigheten, kalte av forsamlingen, aktede menn. s3 De flokket seg sammen mot Moses og Aron og sa til dem: Nå får det være nok! Hele menigheten er hellig, alle sammen, og Herren er midt iblant dem. Hvorfor skal da dere opphøye dere over Herrens menighet? 4 Da Moses hørte disse ordene, falt han på sitt ansikt. 5 Og han talte til Korah og hele flokken hans og sa: I morgen skal Herren åpenbare hvem som tilhører ham, og hvem som er hellig, så han lar ham komme nær til seg. Den som han utvelger, vil han la komme nær til seg. s6 Gjør nå dette: Ta dere ildkar, både Korah og hele hans flokk, 7 og ha ild i dem og legg røkelse på dem for Herrens åsyn i morgen. Og den mann som Herren utvelger, han skal være den hellige. Nå får det være nok, dere Levis barn! 8 Og Moses sa til Korah: Hør nå, dere Levis barn! 9 Er det for lite for dere at Israels Gud har utskilt dere fra Israels menighet for å la dere komme nær til seg, så dere skal utføre tjenesten ved Herrens tabernakel og stå for menighetens åsyn for å tjene den? s10 Han har latt deg komme nær til, og med deg alle dine brødre, Levis barn. Og nå vil dere også ha prestedømmet! 11 Det er mot Herren du og hele flokken din gjør opprør. For hva er Aron, siden dere knurrer mot ham? s

12 Så sendte Moses bud etter Datan og Abiram, Eliabs sønner. Men de sa: Vi kommer ikke. 13 Er det ikke nok at du har ført oss opp fra et land som flyter med melk og honning, for å la oss dø i ørkenen, siden du til og med vil gjøre deg til hersker over oss? 14 Du har slett ikke ført oss inn i et land som flyter med melk og honning, eller gitt oss åkrer og vingårder i eie. Vil du stikke ut øynene på dette folket? Vi kommer ikke. s15 Da ble Moses meget vred og sa til Herren: Vend deg ikke til deres offer! Ikke så mye som et esel har jeg tatt fra dem! Ikke en eneste blant dem har jeg gjort noe ondt. s16 Så sa Moses til Korah: I morgen skal du og hele flokken din stille dere fram for Herrens åsyn, både du og de andre og Aron. 17 Og dere skal ta hver sitt ildkar og legge røkelse på dem, og dere skal bære hver sitt ildkar fram for Herrens åsyn, to hundre og femti ildkar. Du og Aron skal også ta hver sitt ildkar. 18 Så tok de hver sitt ildkar og hadde ild i dem og la røkelse på dem. Og de stilte seg ved inngangen til sammenkomstens telt. Det samme gjorde Moses og Aron. 19 Og Korah samlet hele menigheten mot dem ved inngangen til sammenkomstens telt. Da åpenbarte Herrens herlighet seg for hele menigheten. 20 Og Herren talte til Moses og Aron og sa: 21 Skill dere ut fra denne menigheten, så vil jeg gjøre ende på dem i et øyeblikk. 22 Men de falt ned på sitt ansikt og sa: Gud, du Gud som råder over livsens ånde i alt kjød! Blir du vred på hele menigheten fordi om én mann synder? s

23 Da talte Herren til Moses og sa: 24 Tal til menigheten og si: Gå bort fra hele plassen rundt omkring Korahs, Datans og Abirams bolig! 25 Så sto Moses opp og gikk til Datan og Abiram, og de eldste i Israel fulgte ham. 26 Han talte til menigheten og sa: Gå bort fra disse ugudelige menns telt! Rør ikke ved noe av det som hører dem til, for at dere ikke skal bli revet bort for alle deres synders skyld! s27 Da gikk de bort fra Korahs, Datans og Abirams bolig. Men Datan og Abiram var gått ut og sto i inngangen til teltene sine med sine koner og sine barn, både store og små. 28 Og Moses sa: På dette skal dere kjenne at det er Herren som har sendt meg til å gjøre alle disse gjerninger, og at jeg ikke gjør dem av egen drift: 29 Dersom disse menneskene dør på samme måte som alle andre mennesker, eller om de blir hjemsøkt på samme måte som alle andre mennesker, da har Herren ikke sendt meg. 30 Men dersom Herren gjør noe som ikke har hendt før - dersom jorden lukker opp sitt gap og sluker dem og alle deres, så de farer levende ned i dødsriket, da vet dere at disse mennene har foraktet Herren.

31 Med det samme han hadde talt disse ordene, revnet jorden under dem. 32 Jorden åpnet sitt gap og slukte dem og deres boliger og alt det folk som tilhørte Korah, og alt det de eide. 33 De for levende ned i dødsriket med alle sine. Jorden skjulte dem, og de omkom og ble utryddet av menigheten. s34 Hele Israel som sto rundt omkring dem, flyktet da de hørte deres skrik. De sa: Jorden kunne sluke oss også!

35 Og det for ild ut fra Herren og fortærte de to hundre og femti menn som hadde båret fram røkelsen. s

36 Da talte Herren til Moses og sa: 37 Si til Eleasar, Arons sønn, presten, at han skal ta ildkarene ut av brannen, men strø glørne langt bort, for ildkarene er blitt hellige. 38 De ildkarene som tilhørte disse mennene som ved sin synd har forbrutt sitt liv, skal det gjøres tynne plater av til å kle alteret med. For de bar dem fram for Herrens åsyn, og derfor er de hellige. De skal være til et tegn for Israels barn. 39 Så tok presten Eleasar de ildkarene av kobber som de hadde båret fram, disse menn som var brent opp, og lot dem hamre ut til plater til å kle alteret med, 40 for at Israels barn skulle huske at ingen fremmed mann - ingen som ikke var av Arons ætt - skulle komme nær og brenne røkelse for Herrens åsyn, så det ikke skulle gå ham som det gikk Korah og flokken hans - slik som Herren hadde talt til ham ved Moses. s

Folket knurrer igjen mot Moses

41 Men dagen etter knurret hele Israels barns menighet mot Moses og Aron og sa: Det er dere som har slått Herrens folk i hjel! 42 Da menigheten samlet seg mot Moses og Aron, vendte de seg begge til sammenkomstens telt, og se, skyen dekket det, og Herrens herlighet åpenbarte seg. 43 Og Moses og Aron gikk fram foran sammenkomstens telt,

44 og Herren talte til Moses og sa: 45 Gå bort fra denne menigheten, så vil jeg gjøre ende på den i et øyeblikk. Da falt de ned på sitt ansikt,

46 og Moses sa til Aron: Ta ildkaret og ha ild fra alteret i det og legg røkelse på og skynd deg så bort til menigheten med det og gjør soning for dem! For vreden er gått ut fra Herrens åsyn, straffedommen er begynt. 47 Og Aron gjorde som Moses hadde sagt. Han tok ildkaret og løp midt inn i flokken. Og se, straffedommen var alt begynt blant folket. Så la han røkelsen på og gjorde soning for folket, 48 mens han sto der mellom de døde og de levende. Da stanset straffedommen. s49 Men det var fjorten tusen sju hundre mann som døde under pesten, i tillegg til dem som døde for Korahs skyld. 50 Aron vendte tilbake til Moses ved inngangen til sammenkomstens telt. Og straffedommen var stanset.
