My initial reaction to this passage is, what the heck is up with these laws. They do not seem holy or good.
I think this is the way God is explaining to Moses to judge the people. God is not saying these situations are right, but rather that when these jacked up situations arise, here is how you should handle them. It's like Moses is a Justice of the Supreme Court trying to determine the right actions to take place in this whole mess of a situation that was the Israelite people. Jesus comes later to explain and demonstrate how we ought to live from the get go.
