A Fickle People
On Palm Sunday, we are accustomed to remembering the story of Jesus riding through the crowds of people on a donkey, while the people shouted, "Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!" We recall them laying down articles of clothing and palm branches on the road for him to ride into the city upon.
But we rarely read the words that Jesus spoke on Palm Sunday as he witnessed the city of Jerusalem ahead of Him. (Read Luke 19:42-44)
Jesus speaks not to the crowds, but to the Pharisees who are encouraging Jesus to make the people stop worshiping Him. Instead, Jesus enlightens them as to the future of Jerusalem and its destruction. He warns those listening that Jerusalem will be destroyed because they chose not to accept Him as the savior of the world.
Jesus' words remind us that He was fully aware that some would trust Him, and some would not. That some would serve Him and some would betray Him. And He even knew that some would obey Him one minute, and betray Him the next.
The painful reality is realizing that He's loved me despite the times when I've praised Him with one breath and denied Him, so to speak, with the next.
