What you have believed will be done for you
Scripture Matthew 9:29
He touched their eyes and said, “What you have believed will be done for you!”
Observation
A synagogue leader whose daughter just died asks Jesus to come lay His hand on her so that she will live. Then a woman touches the edge of His clothing, seeking healing for years of chronic bleeding. The woman is healed. At the leader’s house, Jesus takes the girl’s hand and she came back to life.
Two blind men follow Jesus when He leaves that place. They hadn’t seen what happened, but could taste the excitement in the crowd. Hope stirred within them, and they shouted to Jesus, “Have mercy on us.” No response from Jesus.
Jesus went into a house, and the blind men followed Him. Then Jesus says to them, “Do you believe I can do this?” “Yes, Lord” they answered. He touched their eyes and said, “What you have believed will be done for you!” Then they could see.
Three amazing miracles back to back. None were denied. Indeed, Jesus healed everyone who came to Him believing, asking.
Application
There is no mention in the gospels of anyone being turned away when they asked for healing. Yet, there likely were those within earshot of Jesus who remained afflicted. They didn’t have the persistence to get through the crowds to get to Him, or the faith to ask.
What do I believe Jesus can do? Do I have the faith and determination these people did in their desperation?
As a member of the church prayer team, I often pray for people with overwhelming needs, believing that God can work the miracles they need. The persistent bleeding story reminds me of a little boy with frequent nose bleeds. His mom and I prayed together, believing. She tracked me down the next Sunday, excited that God had indeed healed her son - the nose bleeds had stopped.
Somehow, it’s easier to believe for others than for oneself. Yet, God’s promises are that the prayer of faith shall save the sick and the Lord will heal them. That also applies to me.
Prayer
Lord, your healing is still available for those who believe. I believe, help my lack of faith.
