Saul did not walk with the Lord. He only asked the Lord for help when he needed it. Thus, he could not discern the Lord's voice for himself. Since he couldn't hear the Lord's voice directly, he relied on Samuel.
Samuel died, so he panicked and sought a medium, which is detestable to the Lord. They both should have been put to death. The medium was shocked that her usual demon didn't appear but instead the Lord revealed Samuel himself. Saul got his wish of hearing from the Lord through Samuel, but it was not news he wanted to hear.
In your walk, you have to be constantly in relationship with Jesus. You must be able to discern His voice at all times and recalibrate when you don't. Otherwise, you will drift further and further away from Him by default. If you are not seeking Him, you are falling away.
