A decision David would regret

David promises the position of commander to the man who is first to attack the Jebusites. This sounds an awful lot like the way Saul did things. Saul promised exemption from taxes and the hand of his daughter to whoever defeated Goliath. Saul probably regretted making that offer when David was the one to do it.

So here is David, just going by what he has seen his predecessor do, and makes a decision he would ultimately regret. Joab becomes his commander and would cause David so much heartache throughout his reign.

Just because you've seen something done a certain way does not mean that's the way you should do it. Listen for God's direction and the advice of wise people around you. You may need to pay attention to how NOT to do things.
