Speak to the Rock
The people of Israel complained yet again regarding their circumstances. In respond to the intercession of Moses and Aaron, the Lord gave Moses instruction on how to handle the problem. Moses was to take his rod with him and speak to the rock that it might yield water. Previously under similar circumstances, Moses had to strike the rock with his rod.
The rock was Jesus (I Cor 10:4) from which they drank.
The rod was symbolic of authority. God (supreme authority) called for the Rock to be struck (crucified) that we might drink from Him the water of life. The father then gave us authority (the rod) to speak to the rock that we might receive from Him all that we need.
In light of this revelation, Moses’s actions were not merely disobedient; they disrupted the revelatory plans of the Father regarding his son, Jesus. Israelites, had Moses been fully obedient, would have been able to see yet another example foreshadowing the work of the Messiah on behalf of God’s people.
There were potential generational consequences to Moses’ action; as such his punishment was severe. James warns believers (James 3:1) that teachers receive stricter judgment.
Let us walk in the authority given to us. Let us speak to our Rock that we might receive all we need to be fruitful for Him
