May His Words be on my Tongue
Scripture
The Spirit of the Lord spoke through me. His words were on my tongue.
Observation
At the end of his days, David is reflecting on his amazing life. He was the man whom God raised up, whom the God of Jacob anointed, the singer of Israel’s psalms, who learned to know God early in his life as a shepherd boy.
He and his team had accomplished amazing things, but top of mind for David was that the Spirit of the Lord spoke through him. The God of Israel, the rock of Israel, the Lord of the Universe, the Highest One, the Creator and Sustainer of all spoke through his, a former shepherd boy.
In the days of the Old Testament, God spoke through prophets. But, unique among the kings, His words were on David’s tongue.
Application
Sometimes, I am at a loss for words. Or, I struggle to find the right words. After the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit came to dwell in Christ followers to teach, reveal truth, guide, convict, comfort, enable. And, He is in me the mind of Christ, giving words to speak into people’s lives and situations.
My challenge is to quiet my own thoughts to be able to hear and know His thoughts. As I spend time in His Word each day, listening for what the Holy Spirit would speak to me through it, I grow in relationship with and understanding of Him. I learn to recognize and hear His voice. I can seek and gain His mind and understanding for the details of my day and the issues or challenges it brings.
Then, in the moments where I need His wisdom, His words, I can be tuned into His Spirit, with His words on my tongue. All I need to do them is speak them out. The more I learn to do that, the more His Kingdom can come in me and through me.
Prayer
Lord, help me to make time with You each day, to grow in my knowledge of You and familiarity with your voice. May I have the confidence and boldness to speak your words into my day.
