God Stops Pursuing?

I think it's interesting how God in certain parts of scripture pursues people. Paul (before his conversion Saul) for instance was trying to kill all Christians. But God pursued him and brought him to salvation.
However here you see God let people go. People who have lost all sense of the importance of a knowledge of God. Is this perhaps the difference. Paul, although he was trying to kill Christ followers, was doing it because he believed it to be the right thing in Gods eyes. So God pursued him to show him the right way of thinking. What if we don't care about the right way of thinking and only care about our way of thinking? Does God stop pursuing?
