The Discipline of the Lord
Throughout Israel's wanderings in the wilderness, God spoke to them from the pillar of cloud. He answered their prayers for food, clothing, protection from enemies. He forgave them when they fell short but at the same time, He disciplined them in their sin. This is an important distinction that we often miss! WIth the LORD there is forgiveness of sin but there is also His discipline. He wants us to understand our need to go His way so He will get our attention through consequences in our lives because of the choices we have made. Forgiveness does not mean that there are no consequences. God loves us enough to let our sin find us out so that we turn from it and go His way instead. Without that discipline we would end up worse off then before! This principle can be applied in parenting. We are always called to forgive as God in Christ has forgive us (Eph. 4:32) but we are also called to discipline them in order to turn our children's hearts to the LORD. Forgiveness does not mean condoning sin but rectifying sin.
