Let It Be

These verses are among those that epitomize the Christmas story to me. They’re so familiar that its hard to pull back and hear it the way Mary would have heard it. In that short message, Mary is told not only that she’ll have a son, but that he will be great, he will sit on the throne of David and his kingdom will have no end. It had been generations since someone sat on the throne of David. This was implying the end of their Roman occupation and that her son would be the messiah himself. It was an overwhelming delivery of news. She asks how this will happen because she’s a virgin and receives an answer that is beyond understanding. However, she believes even though there are more questions than answers--questions that will be answered over the course of her life, but she’s ready to believe and cooperate now.
We are all faced with a similar choice when we hear about Jesus. It’s an overwhelming amount of information with incredulous claims. Whether you already believe or if this is the first time you’re hearing about the redemptive story of Jesus, we all have the opportunity to say yes, let it be to me as you’ve said. Where are you in that process? What are your questions?
