Maybe I'm an idiot, but I just now finally saw some relation between the fig tree story and Jesus clearing the temple. The fig tree was something that people would go to for food, sustenance, and life. In its season, the fig tree did just that. But when its season had ended, and it stopped supplying what was needed, it was nothing more than a tree that had the reputation of supplying what was needed, but couldn't actually supply it. It was out of season and Jesus came to it and cursed it saying "May no one ever eat from you again." If you can't supply what is needed all the time, then you will whither and die. If you don't produce fruit, then you are done.
The temple had at one time provided what people needed. Spiritual food, sustenance, and life. It had it's season, but over time became a "den of robbers" rather than a "house of prayer". So Christ came to the temple, just as he came to the fig tree, and he cursed it as well. It was no longer the place that God had commissioned it to be. It had a reputation of being able to supply what was needed, but it was out of season. It's time had passed. It was done.
I guess I just really love the foreshadowing of verses 12 - 14. This section of scripture came alive to me today, and I just wanted to get my ideas down here. Helps me to write things out.
