Three sources of adversity: God, Sin, and the Devil
Responding to adversity caused by sin:
1. Assume the Responsibility (James 1:13-15, Romans 7)
- don't blame someone else
- no one likes to condemn himself, but this is precisely what God requires of us
- blaming others began in the Garden of Eden
2. Confess and repent of your sins
- confession and repentance is a complete change of mind, heart, and will
- Psalm 32:5
- 1 John 1:9
3. Forsake any known sins (Proverbs 28:13)
4. Confess to others and receive prayers for deliverance
- Romans 8:1
- deliverance comes through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit
Responding to the adversity that is the result of God:
Truth about adversity:
- our faith is the target, not us
1. God uses adversity to teach us patience (James 1:2-3, Romans 5:3-5, 1 Corinthians 10:13, Jeremiah 29:11, Psalm 40:1-2)
2. God uses adversity to produce maturity and completeness in our lives. (1Peter 5:10)
3. God will use adversity to produce wisdom our lives. (Proverbs 4:5-13)
How do we get wisdom?
- James 1:5-6: ask for it
