Foreshadows: Abram and Israel

Abram goes to Egypt because there is a severe famine in the land. Israel will do the same.

Joseph goes before Israel/Jacob to prepare their salvation. Jacob's children go to Egypt expecting, like Abram, to leave when the severe famine is over. However, God warns Abram that the children of Israel will remain in Egypt for 400 years before He, Himself will lead them out.

Baby Jesus is also taken to Egypt by the second Joseph and remains there until it is safe for the family to return. The famine may just be a spiritual one, but it is dangerous for the family to stay in Israel at this time as Herod is dtermined to remain king. Our salvation is prepared for us in the child, thanks to Joseph for obeying.

But God has it all under control. Those who are to be saved will be saved. They are provided for by His hand and His plan. All they must do is obey and go in faith.
