Jesus is Greater than Melchizedek

Jesus is a better hope

  1. First we need to know and understand some of the Levitical Priesthood. People knew they would inevitably break the OT Law; however, they also knew and understood that the Priesthood could fix it (make an atonement) on their behalf before God. Thus, the priesthood was of GREAT importance.

However, there is scripture that partook before the Levitical priesthood that took place which shows what life was like without the OT Law.

Genesis 14 - Abraham's family was taken away during a war of Kings (Lot). And Abarham and his army wet and took back their spoils from the King of Sodom.

Melchizedek was both King of Salem and Priest of Salem (Abraham's side) When the scriptures state that only that "Without any dispute the lesser is blessed by the greater" and we see Abraham being blessed by Melchizedek - we note, that Melchizedek is greater than Abaraham.

Moreover we note that Abarham also gave a tenth (tithe) to Melchizedek - which shows the importance (Without the OT Law's direction) to give to those who minister to you and your family (thus we see that it biblical, not by OT law, but by faith to tithe Pre-OT Law and Post OT Law).

So although Abraham is looked up to and is the father of the the nation of Israel, he is lesser than Melchizedek; thus, when "someone" is in the order of Melchizedek - they are of a higher ranking.

Also, Melchizedek was both a King and Priest and we know King Saul was marred for his working as King and Priest (1 Samuel 13:8-13).

Thus again show Melchizedek's importance and position was greater and "outside" of the greatness of the OT law - which hadn't been established yet.

So we see Melchizedek is greater than the Levitical Priesthood and in some respects OT Law. Also, we see that through Abraham the Levitical priesthood paid tithes to Melchizedek in Hebrews 7:9.

Secondly, this "type" is being compared to Jesus in Hebrews as being a precursor or "type" of Christ. Hebrews 7:17

Thirdly, Jesus is greater than Melchizedek and Melchizedek is greater the the OT law and OT Priesthood and Greater than Abrham. Thus Jesus is the greatest. Hebrews 7:18-19.
