Charade
Pilate's main fear was that Rome would discharge him if he allowed a Hebrew "King" to gather followers. It is clear at the point Pilate turns Jesus over for execution that he doesn't believe Jesus is an insurrectionist or a "King" who would lead a worldly rebellion. "Just another one of their religious fanatics" he may have thought. Why did he do it? Because he cared more for political popularity and power than he cared for justice. Not much has changed. Satan still prowls this world.
