This verse (specifically in the NIV) shows us 3 ways to grasp God's word. Pay attention, Listen, and Apply your heart. All 3 are crucial. If one is missing, the rest are useless. It's not enough just to hear God's word, we must take action! In reverse you can't just be stupid and take action without wisdom and knowledge.
