a sabbath days journey

Why does Luke include the distance reference of the "sabbath day's journey"? As though none of his readers would have been aware of how far it was from the city to the mount of olives! Or did he think ahead to future generations and lands who might not have known the geography of his area?

It's also noteworthy that this unit of measurement doesn't come from the bible itself. It was a measurement that had arisen in the culture in which Luke was writing that was really based on how far you could get away with moving on a sabbath day and still be obeying the letter of the law. This is a reminder that even pop-culture is redeemable by the Lord.

How must the disciples have felt on that 15-20 minute trek back to the city! What did they talk about, or maybe were they just in reverent silence the whole way?
