"If you don't know.. then I don't know"


That was a phrase that my mother used to say when we would ask her a dumb question. What I find most endearing about this banter between the Pharisees and Jesus is that he pegs them completely. But it gives us an indication of how God works. God is a god of order, and he does not violate the order that he creates.

Sure on earth, He was still God. So he could have usurped the laws of the land, and done so brazenly and unabashed. But he would always refer the Pharisees back to the laws that they abided by, so when they attempted to "trap" him, he simply played by their rules -- beating them at their own game.

You would think that the Pharisees, legalistic by nature, would say -- "man, this guy has to be Christ b/c he is too brilliant to be man without authority from above." And despite their scriptures that indicated that He (Christ) would be coming...

Some poeple can't see the forest for the trees.
