Few Words
The Gentiles, Jesus said, heap up empty phrases that are full of many words. We shouldn't foolishly think that we will be heard by God if we do the same. Conversely, I submit that we will be ignored by God if we don't have "enough" words.
Too many people have too many layers of complexities that inhibit their prayer lives. We worry that we're not doing something right. "I don't pray long enough." "My mind wanders." "I don't know what to say when I pray."
And because we feel inadequate, we avoid prayer. As if God doesn't want to hear us until we fix these issues. But the truth is that, according to the gospel, we are received! We won't be heard by performing with many words and we won't be ignored if we don't have enough words.
