It's All In The Routine
The contrast that Jesus makes in his sermon here is conspicuous. Miraculous and mystical works don't necessarily signal a transformed person who is devoted to God. On the other hand, Jesus is looking for works. He says that a truly transformed, Gospel-influenced person will do God's will and diligently build his or her life on the word of God.
One avenue is the spectacular. The other is the routine. The daily grind of worship - devotion to God. The sweet spot of the kingdom of God is found in the daily and faithful following of Jesus, treasuring his words far above the sensational vices of this world. It is found in the routine of following him wherever he leads, through seasons that are spiritually bland, dull, and unsensational.
