Justice: Just This
I've noticed that my day will often progress based on how I get out of bed in the morning. A positive, energetic, and goal focused day start usually produces better results.
God knows that our inner life produces our outer results. Jeremiah in v. 11 admonishes the "house of Judah" to start their day with an attitude of being just. He says the antidote for their "evil regime" is to do justice.
Don't take lightly the directive to: "Rescue victims from their exploiters." Stepping out of ourselves, and into the lives of others with such an attitude could transform our neighborhoods and our world: see that jobs are equally available. Argue for economic policies that empower all levels of society. Work for fairness and decency in the workplace. Support U.S. foreign policy that supports democratic reforms and the overthrow of dictators who murder thousands of people. Contribute to great organizations like World Vision so people may have food, clean water, and medical care.
But these "big" actions are not our only choices. Too many times I have done nothing because I could not do everything. How we relate at work, in our families, and with our friends, also provides opportunities for doing "justice." Do we stand up for persons who have been abused or wronged? Do we oppose harassment and bullying at school or work? Do we ask that administrators and bosses conform their conduct to the formal policies of the organization?
We are the answers to our prayers. The Holy Spirit never intended to work alone. He works in us so that He may work through us. We are, simply put, to love one another. So, today, find some small way, by taking one simple action, to "rescue victims from their exploiters." [v.12].
