What Are You Looking At?
As I'm reading through Matthew, I keep noticing that the Pharisees always have their eye on Jesus. They're watching him and his disciples like a hawk, looking for him to mess up or do something they don't approve of.
Now, normally I'd be all for keeping your eyes on Jesus, but in this case, the Pharisees didn't recognize him for who he was - The Son of God. All they saw was a man. And that man wasn't keeping the law or playing by the religious rules.
Yet, the Pharisees, who were supposed to be the religious leaders, the ones most closely connected to God, weren't even looking at God, they were spending their time looking at men. Not only that, they were constantly worried, frustrated and trying to destroy and malign those men's character and reputation.
Point? If we spend our time and energy focused on people and everything that's wrong or things we don't agree with, we will quickly fall into the trap of religion and away from the life-giving relationship we're meant to have with God Himself. However, if, like Jesus, we keep our eyes focused on our Lord and Father, if we are intent on knowing and doing His will, we will be effective and can change the world.
So again, I ask, what (or who) are you looking at?
