The northern kingdom from the time of their first king, Jeroboam, started in idolatry with the 2 golden calves. They drifted farther and farther away from Abba. They began to break all of His commandments and grew more and more wicked in spite of the warnings from His prophets. After hundreds of years of waiting for the northern kingdom of Israel (referred to as Ephraim here) to turn back to Him, Abba had to discipline them. They would become a lesson for the southern kingdom of Judah and the future Christians.
As a good father would, Abba has to discipline His children. He is righteous. He is holy. He is just. He is love. Love disciplines. If we did not love our children, we would ignore them and allow them to do whatever they want. Abba loves us too much to allow us to wander from Him. He will first convict us. Because He is slow to anger and full of love, we usually don't suffer obvious consequences of sin until we continually ignore Him.
Spend quiet time at Jesus' feet daily in His word and just silently listening. You will begin to hear Holy Spirit's voice. He will tell you what needs to be corrected in your life. Make the correction before the consequences.
