Jesus Is My Wet Wipe
I really enjoy ribs.
When I lived in Charleston, WV I went to the Rib Fest on Magic Island. There were several different vendors, both professional and amateur, that would prepare their ribs in the way they liked best. After paying an admission fee that covered one meal from one vendor, we would take our time, walking around the area, looking, smelling, even sampling the various foods; pork ribs, beef ribs, slaws and salads. Then we would pick what we liked best and get the meal and chow down.
But ribs are messy. Sauce gets everywhere; hands, fingers, fingernails, mouth, mustache, nose. If you’re doing it right, maybe even on your shirt. In the end, you’ve had a meal to remember, but a mess you wish you could forget.
Enter the wet wipe; one of the greatest inventions ever! One for your face, one for each hand, and off to home to wash the shirt. The mess is clean and you feel fresh and clean.
Sin is a lot like a Rib Fest. We sometimes look around, allowing our eyes to wander, maybe even diving in when we see what we like. We get messy in the sin we find, and get it everywhere, sometimes even all over the ones we love the most.
Enter Jesus, the 1 John 1:9 Jesus. When we turn to Him with our dirty hands, He is the one who cleans us up. When we turn from the sin we’ve been playing in, He takes every bit of the filth and makes us clean and puts us back in right-standing before God.
Rib Fest is a good thing, and better when you have a few wet wipes handy. Sin is a killer, and will hurt everything it touches. But Jesus is the best cleaner-upper, and is waiting for us, praying for us, ready to clean the mess of our humanity.
