The term "dog" that Jews used to refer to the Gentiles, was derogatory, and equivalent to the modern term for female dog that people commonly used ("b*tch").

This is important to note here, because Jesus does not use that term. It's a more endearing term, which refers to a pet, much like a cute little puppy.
